Hey. Sounds like one of my first tutorials ever is going to be just fine for you. Make sure to check it out, leave a comment, and maybe even post your results on youtube for me to see. I’d really like that.

Hey!
That’s an excellent question. I was surprised no one asked it before.in fact that is a bit of an issue, and the only solution for now is to do as you say… animate the depth/density, unless you’re moving the camera very fast and you’re using motion blur… than I think you could live without it.
I am working to solve this issue and a few minor adjustments. Update coming soon.

February 5, 2008 at 9:48 pm in reply to: Texture or Bump Map in A. Kramer’s Blue Planet?Well… in fact you can do that in AE alone… to some extend of course. It will never be as cool as it might be out of a 3D package, but still you can get away with it. Depends on what you’re looking for.
Funny thing, but after Mr. Kramer’s tutorial a lot of people were asking me about exact same thing. So I decided I’ll record a tutorial on that. I just don’t know when… I’m being pretty busy right now.
But if you need to know this right away you may call me up on skype: https://maltaannon.com/maltaannons-hotline/ or leave a skype text message.

Also I think you should take a look at the Skybox tutorial I made some time ago. It could help you out. You could then orbit the camera around and see the sky for all times.

Good luck.

I agree with David. It’s always bast to shoot these kind of stuff, but I know it’s easy to say that when you’re not the one that has to do it, so here are some ideas.
It’s not ready-to-use recipe but it will hopefully give you and others something to think of.
Aside of the whole real-look problem (displacements, highlights, reflections and stuff) the basic problem is animating the water drops. My first try would be using some particle engine – in this case Particle Illusion instead of what you probably thought I’m going to say (Trapcode Particular). The reason I choose Particle Illusion is that it has more to do with simulations, than it has with generating cool looking particles.
I would combine Particle Illusion and Advanced Lightning to create a path that the water drops will take while pouring from the top of the window. That would hopefully create an animation of particles traveling on the lightning.
Then I’d apply some blurring filters, threshold and others to create the drop shape. Then some displacement, turbulence displacement, and finally CC Glass and Mr Mercury for final touch-ups…
I haven’t tried it, so it’s hard to say what this technique is missing, but I have a strong feeling it has something good to it and that it’s worth a try.
Good luck.

I really don’t know what’s the big deal. I mean sure it’s amazing and all, but it’s just a composite. And one of the simplest do to, in terms of technique. Please don’t get me wrong, I know it wasn’t easy… All the planning, shooting, post work and everything. I’m amazed, but theres nothing technically and workflowly (I bet I just made that word up) new or difficult about it.
Anyways… to answer your question. They could, but I personally think that would be a waste of time. Since it was a steady shoot I think they just used a simple mask – a general outline, or difference keying. Hard to say from such poor youtube quality, but that’s how I’d try to do it as my first approach.

I wouldn’t get you wrong Aharon even if you wanted me too 🙂 You know I love you man 🙂 And that displacement is exactly my point. You have to have more painting skills, or at least a good feeling, and more time 🙂 But as you pointed out. It works, and it works fine.

Heres one with more details in it. Took 8 minutes 🙂

What I actually do is that I create a new layer over the photo, fill it with mid-gray (127,127,127), turn the opacity to 70%, and then I use Dodge and Burn soft brushes on that layer, but it may also be good to set up several shades of gray as solid colors and use them instead. It seems that that way it will be easier to maintain the depth between certain areas, but as long as someone is a good painter it doesn’t really matter.

Guys! It’s just a displacement map 🙂 No biggy.

Even something as simple as this will work. It took less than 5 mins to do it. I think it this kind of photo it would be good to start off by doing a circular gradient. it’s hard to get that mid tones transition if you’re not a good photoshop painter 😉
