3D Stroke
Posted by Inga Kraus on May 8, 2008 at 11:26 amHi!
I would like to create a ribbon with flags in the inside like this:
Because it should run smooth I have chosen the trapcode 3D stroke. But now I would like to put my flags in the middle of the two strokes. But I don’t know how to do it. I’m even not sure if it’s possible at all?
Can anbody help me? Thank’s in advance!

May 8, 2008 at 2:20 pmHmm i don’t think you can make this effect just using 3d stroke.
U can use 3dstroke as a matte, to reveal your flag image, but you wont get your flag layer in real 3d space. And in this case, you don’t need plugin to do this.the real way to do this is in a 3d software (3ds, maya, xsi,…)
maybe with a plugin like 3d invigorator? i’m not really friendly whit this one. but the thing is you can’t do this with 3dstroke only! -

May 8, 2008 at 7:24 pmYou might be able to cobble together something like this, but it would be limited to one camera angle and would not be very flexible.
As mentioned above, the most flexible way to do this would be in a 3D package by UVing your artwork onto a flat surface and then run the surface through some deformers, like a flow or sine deformer.
However, that said, you could try using Bezier Warp (or Mesh Warp) on an over wide pre-composed comp with your flag artwork running through it horizontally. Place that comp in a conformed comp (NTSC for instance) and apply the Bezier Warp to it and play with the control handles.
You could link the various related tangents (With Bezier Warp) with expressions with offsets. This method would not allow orbiting but might set you in the right direction.
Hope this helps.

May 8, 2008 at 11:31 pmWell… I think you could pull it off just in AE, but on the other hand it would be much easier just to do it in 3D. Take a look at my tutorial at: https://maltaannon.com/articles/after-effects/growing-3d-vines/
Maybe this will give you some ideas. Feel free to contact me directly by skype (chat mode). You can find the contact info on my website. If we’ll figure this out together than we’ll post a solution in here. Sounds cool?

Jerzy, that’s absolute amazing what you are doing with AE! Great! I just tryed it with your tutorial and I really like the result! But I guess I will have some more questions in the next few days. Then it would be great to contact you again!
