If all you need to do is letterbox the video and then change it’s vertical position, your mask idea would work great…

Highlight the sequence(s) you want to recapture, and control click on one of them to open the media manager.
In the Media Manager window, select:
Make Offline,
Set the res to DV,
Delete unused media.
Create a new project file.This will create a new offline set of sequences and master clips of these sequences for recapture. If you’ve logged the tapes like 1, 1a (after TC break) 1b (next material after next TC break) this won’t be hard to recapture… you’ll just ff the tape to the next set of TC when the computer is done with 1 and asks for 1 a… etc.. of course if you didn’t log this way, you are in a world of pain, you’d have to figure out which part of the duplicate TC the clip really comes from and change it’s tape name first.
I’d do this then recapture, then edit… doing it at the same time will result in more headaches, becuase reconnecting to these shorter new clips may really be unworkable…

You probably need more RAM, or you need to work in smaller sequences and marry them all in the end to a master sequence…

Try taking your media offline by putting the renders and captured media in another folder. Then reconnect the media a few files at a time to find the bad one… out of memory points right at this problem.

If you are happy with DV as your offline format, you shouldn’t have to render at all using the stock presets for it. Kona 2 to DV, and then using Apple’s or the Kona 2’s DV setting for the sequences… So if this is what you are doing and you still have to render, then trash your preference file for FCP and give it another go.

Trash your preference file for DVD SP, and it will go back to the default settings. I get really nice results encoding with DVD SP 4 with a CBR setting of 7… but the files are large enough that the most you can put on a 4.7 disk is about 60 minutes.
