You’ll get the best realtime preview by keeping all media files on drives other than your startup disk. Is this what you are doing? Post which versions of OS, FCP, and QuickTime you are running and which capture card you are using? Also note that realtime playback has a lot of options you can set to give you better results, such as not dropping or allowing droped frames, quality playback settings also come into play here. You aren’t seeing problems after rendering, right?
Faster drives help too. For example, I’ll get much more RT when playing back from a fibre channel array over say, a FireWire drive… Also not necessarily going to help here, but more RAM in these machines is going to make your life better. I’d suggest another gig per machine… Motion especially benefits from this. If the choppy playback really gets you, try using the QuickView function in FCP to preview unrendered effects, or type option+p to force a ram held frame at a time playback, this will be slower, but not drop any frames…

I’d suggest a reinstall from the ground up, and get yourself to OS 10.3.8, QT 6.5.2, and FCP 4.5 with the last of the CineWave drivers. Post this setup as a question in the CineWave forum here too… ask how workable/stable it is… Might invest in an inexpensive ATA to add to your Mac (internal) and setup that new drive this way. That way you can have a double boot system, and spend the time to make sure you’ve copied all you want from the old system to the new drive etc…

Probably can make this system come back… but you need to post which versions of OS, QuickTime, FCP, and CineWave Drivers you are running… Chances are that you need to rebuild your startup disk from the ground up to make it happen.

Probably time to reinstall a startup disk from the ground up if you see really slow reponse times etc… I do this at least every 6 months or so, and am amazed how snappy things get afterwards.

Dont’ be scared of Chiropractors… they can really get you going fast, and very very rarely does the treament hurt… I had one save my back when I’d been out of work for almost a year once… they really can make a difference. Hope you get to feeling better G…

Probably should look for a plugin transition for this… FCP won’t do it anyway very easily… but if you were to export a version going r to l then another version going l to right, you could import those self contained QT movies and do a simple vertical wipe between them or crop one side to reveal the side that wipes in the other direction.

You need the Nattress plugin with FCP HD… it will do a dandy standards conversion, and then compressed the NTSC version the way you are… works great! https://www.nattress.com
