  • Steven,

From what I have seen on the Areca site in terms of performance, there is not much difference between Raid0, Raid5 and Raid6 if there are 8 disks in the array. With a lesser number of drives, the difference is larger, definitely in the advantage of Raid0, but also with a larger risk of losing data. On another system I have a 6 disk Raid5 array and I once had two disks fail on me. Replacing them one at a time, rebuilding the array after each replacement did restore integrity without losing any data.

For security reasons I’m even contemplating a Raid6 if I use 8 disks in one array. The reason for my question is twofold, on the one hand bandwidth, does performance improve if you have 2 disks in a Raid0 array on the IHCR bus and the other 6 in a Raid5/6 array on the PCI-e bus, or on the other hand all 8 disks on the PCI-e bus in a Raid5/6.

Looking at performance data for an 8 disk Raid5 array, you would have probably something like 200+ MB sustained read/write speeds.

  • Windows can not currently use more than 4 GB. However with Vista coming soon and the expected ($$$$) upgrade from Adobe, I’m hopefull that I can then use the 8 GB.

My boot disk will be a single Raptor. No booting from a Raid.

In general SATA drives are at least twice as fast as firewire drives and nearly three times as fast as USB drives. If you prefer external drives, look for e-SATA drives.

  • Either export as movie from PP using MSDV AVI or use Adobe Media Encoder to export as MPEG DVD. In the latter case I suggest to export elementary streams, not program streams.

The resulting files need to be imported into Encore as assets.

I answered on the Adobe forums, but to repeat, have a look at:

    https://guygraphics.com/

They have a very good reputation and they offer all kinds of custom-built systems.

The trial version does not support HDV. You have to get the full version for that.

The Z1 does not support 720, only 1080

Either check with Matrox, or try with OHCI without the Matrox. Does that work?

Correct, because there is no PAR setting in WM9.
