Steven,
From what I have seen on the Areca site in terms of performance, there is not much difference between Raid0, Raid5 and Raid6 if there are 8 disks in the array. With a lesser number of drives, the difference is larger, definitely in the advantage of Raid0, but also with a larger risk of losing data. On another system I have a 6 disk Raid5 array and I once had two disks fail on me. Replacing them one at a time, rebuilding the array after each replacement did restore integrity without losing any data.
For security reasons I’m even contemplating a Raid6 if I use 8 disks in one array. The reason for my question is twofold, on the one hand bandwidth, does performance improve if you have 2 disks in a Raid0 array on the IHCR bus and the other 6 in a Raid5/6 array on the PCI-e bus, or on the other hand all 8 disks on the PCI-e bus in a Raid5/6.
Looking at performance data for an 8 disk Raid5 array, you would have probably something like 200+ MB sustained read/write speeds.
