  • Disk/ Raid setup on a new system, what do you suggest???

I’m preparing a new system and am wondering what the best disk and Raid setup would be. Here are the details:

    # Chassis: Supermicro CSE-745TQ-R800B
    # Mobo: Supermicro X7DAE
    # CPU’s: 2x Intel 5160 Woodcrest or 5345 Clovertown
    # Memory: 2x Kingston KVR667D8F5K2/2G (8 GB total)
    # Video: PNY nVidia QuadroFX 1500
    # Raid: Areca ARC-1230 12x SATA 2 controller, 1 GB cache
    # Boot disk:WD Raptor 1500AHFD for OS and programs
    # Storage: 8x Seagate 7200.10 SATA 2 @ 500 or 750 GB
    # DVD: 2x NEC AD-7173

I’m wondering how to setup the drives in this new system. There are many choices, but the main interest is getting the best performance for HDV editing. How would you suggest to set this up?

Let me give you some initial thoughts I have and you may be able to direct me in the right direction.

Option 1: Raptor for OS & programs, 8 SATA’s on Areca in Raid 5/6.
Option 2: Raptor for OS & programs, 2 SATA’s on IHCR in Raid 0 for scratch/previews and 6 SATA’s on Areca in Raid 5/6.
Option 3: Raptor for OS & programs, 4 SATA’s in IHCR in Raid 5 for media & projects, 4 SATA’s on Areca in Raid 5 for scratch/previews

Option 2 looks the most promising from my view and possibly allows me to add 2 additional SATA’s (space allowing) to the Areca in the future.

Any suggestions are most welcome. TIA.

that would be a nice setup. However, can windows and Premiere handle 8Gb of RAM? I heard windows can only handle 4, not sure about Premiere. You would also find it difficult to boot windows in a RAID setup.

I heard that Windows can only handle 2Gb per programs, and only 3Gb with a ‘bootup swtich’

Windows can not currently use more than 4 GB. However with Vista coming soon and the expected ($$$$) upgrade from Adobe, I’m hopefull that I can then use the 8 GB.

My boot disk will be a single Raptor. No booting from a Raid.

I see the advantages of RAID0 to increase the speed of the read/write, but I don’t understand the desire for RAID5. I would rather have multiple sets of RAID0 to keep things fast. Backups I get. Mirroring I don’t. Mainly due to the reduction in speed to get the mirror.

    Steven,

From what I have seen on the Areca site in terms of performance, there is not much difference between Raid0, Raid5 and Raid6 if there are 8 disks in the array. With a lesser number of drives, the difference is larger, definitely in the advantage of Raid0, but also with a larger risk of losing data. On another system I have a 6 disk Raid5 array and I once had two disks fail on me. Replacing them one at a time, rebuilding the array after each replacement did restore integrity without losing any data.

For security reasons I’m even contemplating a Raid6 if I use 8 disks in one array. The reason for my question is twofold, on the one hand bandwidth, does performance improve if you have 2 disks in a Raid0 array on the IHCR bus and the other 6 in a Raid5/6 array on the PCI-e bus, or on the other hand all 8 disks on the PCI-e bus in a Raid5/6.

Looking at performance data for an 8 disk Raid5 array, you would have probably something like 200+ MB sustained read/write speeds.
