    Hey gang…

I’m a long-time very happy Premiere user (I think I go back to Premiere 4 ten years ago), now presently running Pro on two suites in Canopus systems (Storm2 and DVrexPro).

I find myself in need of another system now, but am afraid I have not stayed up with the latest developments…. and my research efforts have just proved confusing. And as I understand from talking with a couple of vendors, Canopus systems are not really an option anymore as they are chiefly for their proprietary editing system Edius, not Premiere.

Anyone have any favorite vendors out there who is a good reliable source for TURNKEY nonlinear systems running Premire Pro 2 very WELL and very FAST? We really don’t have the time or energy to build our own system so I would like to find someone reliable that provides turnkey units (the company we bought our two previous systems from no longer exists).

We presently use Premiere only for SD, but HD is to come. And we need all possible ins/outs, not just firewire.

Just to give some tech info (in case that colors anyone’s ideas of what is best for us), we generally shoot 35mm film telecined to digibeta…. or… we shoot 24f with Canon XLH1 married to P+S Technik converter and Leitz PL mount cinema lenses. We just use that setup for SD so far, but will be using it for HD in the future.

    Any advice is greatly appreciated!

    Todd,
Where are you located? If you are in the United States, check out https://www.lnainc.com/

    Thanks Aanarav…

I gave them a quick look, first thing I saw were Matrox systems (if I even mention the word Matrox my senior editor will go screaming from the building)… but I will call them and see what all they have to offer.

Yes, we are in the southeastern US.

Still happy to take any other suggestions from anyone….

    Thanks,

    Hi Todd,
Unfortunately, Canopus has dropped the ball on Adobe products, so Matrox is currently in the running, especially with their Axio line.

Yep… I’m not sure what Canopus was thinking was there. It’s certainly not uncommon for companies like that to have their own (usually wimpy) cutting software, but in the past they never forced you to use it and nothing else. I hate it since we are LONG time (and happy) Canopus users. I’d love to keep Canopus, but definitely won’t give up Premiere to do so.

I’ve never personally used Matrox systems myself, but I have two people on my staff who have and they both really dislike their systems (for whatever personal reasons), including my senior cutter who would probably literally quit if I gave him a Matrox box. I’m not sure what their problems with Matrox are, but they are definitely very deep-rooted (and my guys are very experienced editors who have worked on all kinds of systems).

I’m hoping there is something else great out there… but just haven’t found it yet.

I answered on the Adobe forums, but to repeat, have a look at:

    https://guygraphics.com/

They have a very good reputation and they offer all kinds of custom-built systems.

    Todd,

I’d really recommend that you send your editors to a Matrox Axio demo. It is really impressive stuff. Lots of real time capability in both HD and SD. I went thru the same frustrations in the past with all the same crappola (Pinnacle cards, Matrox RT.X, etc.) that probably poisoned your editors’ opinions – and mine was pretty bad as well. But, if you do want to stick with Premiere, the Axio line is by far, the most productive environment. –naturally, my opinion of course. I’m pretty sure that Axio-based systems must be sold turnkey by authorized dealers. The demo I saw used HP workstation class systems. I am putting one in the budget for next year. I expect that it will save me LOADS of time — and this coming from a guy who previously swore off hardware solutions. Good luck to you.
