Exporting to Windows Media?
Posted by Jon Finster on September 21, 2006 at 2:18 pmI am trying to export my short little 10 second movie clip as a Windows Media file. But when I go to File > Export > Adobe Media Encoder I do not see any preset for 720 x 480, 30fps. Almost all of the presets are for 320 x 240.
Can I export to 720 x 480? Am I missing something?
BTW – I am using PPro 1.5.

September 21, 2006 at 3:04 pmPP2 has an option to choose Windows Media 9 advanced Profile (under the video tab). You can then pick your own resolution. I’m not sure if that was available in PP 1.5. Otherwise, you may have to download the Windows Media Encoder, and export uncompressed.

September 21, 2006 at 4:36 pmFor what it’s worth, on my systems I’ve found that it is faster to export a movie (.avi) from Premiere, and then encode for the Web using Windows Media Encoder.

September 21, 2006 at 4:37 pmFound it! Perfect. Thanks again.
I just read online that wmv uses 640 x 480. Is this really true? So I shouldn’t export out at 720 x 480? I should instead export out at 640 x 480? (I want to use these wmv files in PowerPoint).

September 21, 2006 at 6:08 pmCorrect, because there is no PAR setting in WM9.

September 21, 2006 at 6:10 pmWell, the reason it uses 640×480 instead of 720×480 has to do with the fact that a computer screen is narrower than a standard TV screen (or it used to be until wide LCD screens came along) . 640×640 will fill up the screen on a computer, (when playing full screen). 720×480 will give you small bars on top and bottom.

September 21, 2006 at 9:08 pmJust to add to Vincent’s comments…640 and 720 are the same because 640 has square pixels and 720 has retangular pixels (.9 X 720 = 640). Hope you all sleep better tonight with that insight@#!

September 22, 2006 at 1:58 pmI do a lot of exports for PowerPoint. Here are the WME settings that I use, and have worked reliably on the laptops we use for presentations:
Audio: 192kbps, 48kHz, stereo CBR
Video size: 640×480
Frame rate: 29.97 fps
Video bit rate: 2000K bps
Video smoothness: 0
Decoder complexity: AutoUnder the processing tab:
DeinterlanceThis makes my presenter very happy. He’s a former network TV guy, and a stickler on quality.
Make sure you put the .wmv file on the presentation computer harddrive, and turn off every other process except powerpoint. You may get full screen video to play properly 9 times out of 10 pulling it off the CD/DVD drive, but the 10th time will always be your most important presentation. Warren Morningstar
