Yes it IS a codec issue. In the case I mentioned, those files will ALSO play in WMP but will not appear in Vegas until the MJPEG codec is installed. Use gSpot to figure out what the codec required really is and then install that codec.

It’s included, you just have to MANUALLY create it. Try this:
Put the standard “Linear White to Black” generated media on track 1. This is where you would eventually substitute your own gradient black and white image.
To this generated media, add a Sony Mask Generator effect.
On Track 1, change the Compositing Mode to Multiply (Mask)
On Track 2, place the one of your video clips and then change track 2 to be a CHILD of track 1.
On Track 3, place the other video clip.
Now you can adjust the sliders in the Mask Generator effect on the gradient so as much or as little of Track 2 appears. Using this method, you can provide your own gradients and use them similarly to the results you get with the Cookie Cutter effect.

Install whatever codec is required for those AVI files. Where did those AVI files come from?
For example, many still cameras will take an AVI file. However, most of them require an MJPEG codec in order to see the video.

From a DV tape, the easiest way I know of is to use Scenalyzer Live which has an audio only option.
Alternately, you can run audio from your camera to your sound card and capture the audio direct to the Vegas timeline.

For the cookie cutter, no. However, you can manually create your own luminance effect using your own shaped mask.

My understanding is that Cineform can capture the raw m2t file and also convert to a Cineform AVI file at the same time. You would then need to add them to the timeline via the Explorer window in Vegas. Once added to the timeline, it will automatically be added to the Media Pool.
Alternately, you can manually add those clips to the media pool for adding to the timeline from there. However, it is a manual process.

It’s just a matter of rendering for the format that meets your needs. If you’re done with the video and are going to DVD, it is appropriate to render to MPEG2. If you think you may be doing further editing and/or you’re going to be combining this video clip with other video clips later, the DV-AVI would be much more appropriate.
As far as MPEG2 is concerned, go to it ONLY as the FINAL render. While it’s smaller, it’s also not a good editing format.

Are you sure you rendered to DV-AVI?
There’s really no need to render to a separate file before choosing Tools – Print to DV Tape. Instead, just tell it to print the project to tape and it will automatically just render the pieces that need rendering. Does it work that way?

There is no way to adjust those particular setting from inside DVDA. That’s why most people render to MPEG2 and AC3 in Vegas – there’s much more control using the “Custom” screens.
I’m not sure why it would play fine in some players and not others. 8,000,000 should be fine for the video.
