Rendering
Posted by Steve Edwards on December 17, 2005 at 2:59 amAm I better off rendering to avi or to mpeg 2 in Vegas. I believe it ends up being a larger file doesn’t it (if you use AVI)? I didn’t know which way to go, and if rendering time was different.

December 17, 2005 at 4:07 amIf you’re talking about going out on DVD, then it will finish up as MPEG2 either way.
By using Vegas rather than DVDA to do the MPEG2 conversion, you do have more options such as two pass rendering, but if you have a video duration which is likely to be near the limit, you need to work out the bitrate carefully, or leave it to DVDA using the Optimise/Fit to disk function to do this.

To answer this question, you have to give more information. What are you going to do with the render?
If you are trying to create a DVD, go with MPEG2.
If you are just rendering some pieces that will be put back on the timeline later, DV-AVI.
If you are preparing to print-to-tape, DV-AVI.
What’s your goal?

December 17, 2005 at 6:48 amDon’t know a single thing about bit rate setting. I just usually compose it in Vegas and either author it in DVDA3 or Ulead. I just use the default settings. If there is another way with different settings that would boost the quality, I am wide open for suggestions. DVD’s usually come out pretty good with the default setting.

December 17, 2005 at 2:45 pmIt’s just a matter of rendering for the format that meets your needs. If you’re done with the video and are going to DVD, it is appropriate to render to MPEG2. If you think you may be doing further editing and/or you’re going to be combining this video clip with other video clips later, the DV-AVI would be much more appropriate.
As far as MPEG2 is concerned, go to it ONLY as the FINAL render. While it’s smaller, it’s also not a good editing format.
