  • DVD audio level really low ?? (forgot the fix)

Posted by Zip-edit on December 17, 2005 at 4:22 am

    I know.. I know…
I’ve seen the many posts in the past referancing this problem..but now when I need the answer I cant find it.
So would someone please direct me to the post or tutorial that provides this work around.
Never an issue before cuz i might have had the correct settings as a template.

I’m Vegas user since its inception.
But I just built a new tower with …
    V6C
    DVDA2
    p4 3.0 gig with ht
    intel 915 mobo
    1.5g ddr 400 ram
    lite-on dual layer dvd burner.

and now its more obvious the level being low.
I know there are some audio settings that need to be set differently than default to get this working.

Built project in V6c rendered to ntsc DV avi in V6 then brought into DVDA2. Did the default conversion template to DVD ntsc as I have many times in the past.

Is it in the Vegas “render as dvda” where these adjustments are made or …. I cant remember.

Also…get this…the finished DVD audio plays in sync on some players but not in others ??
all tests done on standalone players around the house.
maybe bitrate is a bit high for some players ??? or…
(I used the default video 8.0 mbps setting)
    thanks in advance

    Help me !!!

    Edward-
I have been following your great insight for a long time.
Now I finally have the pleasure of your help.

    I read your newsletter link.
For some reason I dont remember setting those from Vegas in the past..Is there not another way from inside DVDA ?

If not then I’ll do the conversion in Vegas.

Any thoughts on the random Sync issue I mentioned in the earlier
    post

There is no way to adjust those particular setting from inside DVDA. That’s why most people render to MPEG2 and AC3 in Vegas – there’s much more control using the “Custom” screens.

I’m not sure why it would play fine in some players and not others. 8,000,000 should be fine for the video.

    Thanks for the insight.
The “out of sync” DVD players happen to be of similar make and model and have been behaving weirdly since day one …so I’ll chalk it up as “bad product chipset”

PS: the new Vegas-ized DVD audio conversion technique was a success. !!

Ed – why have I never seen this (low audio in mt DVD’s)? Is it unique to 5.1 mixes?

No. Even stereo mixes drop volume. The content will help determine how severely.

You’ll particularly notice it if you make both DVD and VHS and play them back on the same TV. The DVD may need a volume of 35 while the VHS needs 25 – just to both be the SAME volume. I notice a lot of variance on TV anyway, though.

    Edward.
In referance to why some players played in sync and others not. !
I originally had the project as a “single movie”.
Some players synced and others didnt. I made a bold assumption that maybe upon Disc “boot up” maybe some “cheaper chipset” players might not read and initialize instantly both files.
The sync offset was several frames.
IE: drumstick is coming away from snare when you hear the hit.

So I made a basic “menu” project thinking that the player would have a chance to boot up and recognize a file before a “command to play” was issued.

Results showed that the files now play in sync on all the players now.
This is a test of seven random brand standalone players.

    Any thoughts ??
I really dont have any technical proof to backup this observation only results.

Other than that ..the audio level issue has been rectified .

That’s very interesting. I’ve never heard of anything like that before. Most of my DVDs do have menus of some sort. I have created some “Single Movie” DVDs and have not noticed that problem but the player base for these has not been great enough to make any serious determinations.
