Are you sure you rendered to DV-AVI?

There’s really no need to render to a separate file before choosing Tools – Print to DV Tape. Instead, just tell it to print the project to tape and it will automatically just render the pieces that need rendering. Does it work that way?

I’m sure all you Vegas experts will totally think I’m a dork, but like I said, it’s been a long time since I did this. Do I have to use a firewire to output to DV? Can I adjust settings in my project to output to USB? I know it wouldn’t be ideal, but I have to try to work with what I’ve got.

For Vegas, FireWire is your only option. Vegas doesn’t really support capture or print to tape via USB. On my camcorder the FireWire port is dead, so USB-2 is my only option. I capture using Windows Movie Maker, which works fine. I have not yet had the need to print to tape but I would expect that to work fine as well. You should be able to create an AVI file in Vegas, open it in Windows Movie Maker and print to tape over your USB-2 connection.

This assumes you have XP since Movie Maker comes with XP.

This sounds like a great option, but I am not sure it will let me do it. When I try to “Send to DV camera” I get an error that “Your DV camera is not connected to your computer. Connect your camera to your computer using an IEEE 1394 cable and then turn on the camera.” I originally captured my video from DV using Vegas Video capture, so if I can capture through USB, I am not sure why I am having so many problems printing back to DV through USB. This is getting so frustrating.

YES – Use FIREWIRE – always. USB is not a good for capturing! Stick with the standard and use firewire. You will experience fewer problems and get better results.

I’d be getting it fixed or use another camera to capture. USB capture is much lower quality than firewire.

Well, I finally just gave up and purchased a Firewire PCI Card Bus and Firewire cable and had little trouble whatsoever after that. There was some stuttering on a few “takes” and I just printed to tape again, with good quality. I’d say overall, it was well worth the extra trip to the store and a little extra expense and I wish I’d thought/known to do this in the beginning. Thanks to all of you for your input.

Just for the record Ed it us not. With the Panasonic camcorders, the USB “capture” is the same as FireWire capture. The raw bitstream from the tape is transfered, as is, to the PC. It requires USB-2 of course, but it is still the same quality as FireWire.

I was unaware of any USB methods that would do a raw transfer. All the USB methods I’ve seen actually “captured” the video instead of “Copy” the video and the result was not a standard DV-AVI file. I still know of no way to output via USB, though.

I think the USB-2 transfer is unique to the Panasonic camcorders. As I said, I have not tried print to tape, I finalize everything on DVD, but I will have to get my cam fixed though, but there is always a reason (this time it is Christmas) that I can not part with it for a couple of weeks 🙂
