IMO when your project is over an hr let DVDA render the mpeg2 .. drop AVI into DVDA menu then when you MAKE DVD (prepare) use FIT to DISC

there are basic specifications for AAF and if you go outside those then AAF is going to have problems on different NLE’s ..
3rd party effects do not work with AAF ( except if you are on avid and going to another avid , or Ppro to Ppro ) … in fact many FX’s will not transfer from NLE to NLE = you must keep FX’s simple = dissolves , fads ..
don’t blame the limited spec’s on Vegas .. and don’t go thinking EDL as that is much older then AAF and is very limited … EDL vs AAF = think of AAF as an edl on steroids

there’s a article over at DV magazine on decklink HD card .. yes you can get a card that will do both …the big $$ difference for you will be SD ( digibeta) you might be able to do with current computer ? HD has different requirements = more $$$$$$$$$$$ ..
V5 you would use the decklink capture utility for i/o ..
V6 will do the i/o using decklink … -
perhaps it’s a HEAT problem ??
mpegs use more CPU then avi’s ..

look over at videoguys.com they have 2 DIY systems they have built .. one around 1000.. other around $2000

what do you find difficult in DVDA2 ?
menu’s ?
create single movie ?
sub titles
different languages ? -
it the way copy-trim works .. you can’t turn it off other then don’t use copy/trim …

using AMD 3700/w 1gig ram in laptop … don’t know if it’s faster then centrino but do know it is faster rendering when you use more then just the internal C drive. IMO for fastest rendering= render to external drive( or internal if laptop has 2nd drive) .. i use 2 external drives when on the road ( laptop drives in external cases) ) = 1 on USB and the 2nd on 1394.

forget EDL use AAF ( edl on steroids)
EDL ( this thing is very old ? 25 years) is very limited …
most kinds of transitions are slightly/very differerent in each NLE so you may have to adjust/change transitions. there are certain limitation on number of video /audio tracks .. -
try looking at the camera ?
there are different TC’s on the camera ..
perhaps it does not have the date/time set to record to tape( i think scene detection uses the time of day )
also make sure the camera is set to drop frame.
