YES they will work .. recommend when you open them in V6/5 you do a SAVE AS not a save ..

using HP w/AMD 3700/1gig ram, switch between 30gig and 100gig C drives … just added averatec 4265 laptop P1.6M w/512 ram / 80gig hd ..
both work good with all sony products … i’m using desktop less & less these days.
i too use external USB/1394 drives .. on the road i take external devices (combo usb2/1394) with 2 1/2 laptop H.drives (40, 60,& 100gig- all can get power from USB bus) … if i need more gigs i’ll take a 400gig external ( 3 1/2 drive) ..
no problem using DV rack capturing to C drive on either ….
bottom line is that desktop is still faster and seems to handle more video streams.
i do more pre-rendering when using laptops -
hang in there .we’ll try to come up with suggestions …
” had been using Windows 2000 Pro, and I changed to Windows XP when I reformatted the drives.”
no problem here as you stated clean XP install not a upgrade install..
try jedidv suggestion of unchecking media manager in preference so it does not load in ??
your win2k system worked with V5 … if jedidv suggestion doesn’t work ..i see you upgraded V6 to V6b .. note: on the uninstall you must uninstall sony media manger separate from V6 .. uninstalling V6 does not take out media manager .. if you did not uninstall media manager on the upgrade V6 to V6b try uninstalling both sony media manager and V6 then reinstall V6 .. media manager had changes from build 99 to 115 .. if you have acid 5 pro make sure it build 324 or higher..
before re-installing go to C:program filessony setupV6 and delete the V6 folder ..infact you can delete sony setup folder ..i do remember my DELL with win2K when i switched to XP i had some problems with it .. DELL then came out with a BIOS update for XP only on that model = if you were using win2k you did not use that XP bios update so now that model has win2k bios and a XP bios updates .. you might see if there is a newer then 2003 bios for your MB ?…
if still crashing ..you might install V5 to see how it works with XP on your system …
let us know how, what happens …

how about some computer system info ?
how about the RAID ? is it a raid pci card ?
or is it motherboard based ? ..
if motherboard are you using a intel driver for it ?
is the built in raid adaptec ? or other brand ?= you would use a adaptec driver not intel driver = you’ll have problems if using intel driver on adaptec raid .. could be same with other brands of raid .. NOTE: XP will default to intel driver …did your system come with 2gigs ram ? or did you add memory ?
is the memory exact same ? could a stick be high/low memory mixed together ? -
you might compare the playback buffer settings and other audio setting in V 5 compared to V 6 settings ..

bottom line is CPU speed and hard drives speed (constant read/write) ..
the more streams of video you want = you might look into a hard ware raid using either 2 ATA’s or SATA drives …
if you are using V6 it will take advantage of dual CPU & dual core cpu’s !!!

the V6 upgrade should not zap V2,V3,V4,V5 off your hard drive ..
you should find V4 on your drive = C:program filessonic foundryVegas4 … i still have all the old versions on one of my computers … and on 3 other computers i keep V3-V6 ..

stutter = check to see if the laptop is in a save power running CPU less then 100% .. right click on MY COMPUTER -Properties = then it shows you windows version , RAM , CPU speed (IE: 1.6ghz) , then current system CPU speed (IE: 800mgz) ..
jump = ?? check ALL cable connections

i wonder if the difference in SIZE has to do with where it sits ( as in hard disk format ? fat 16 , fat 32, NTFS, CD , DVD, DVDram ) .. because i’ve noticed data files sitting on DVD’s tend to be larger then when i transfer to a hard drive .. so perhaps it all in how those 1’s & 0’s are counted on each MEDIUM might make the SAME FILE different sizes ?
