    Using Vegas 6.0b.

When I play a clip on the timeline, I hear a distinct crackling noise (static) through my speakers. The clip’s audio is not the problem–the noise is not part of the recording. In fact, I can add any audio, such as a song, to the timeline, and as long as there is a video playing along with the audio, I hear the noise.

Here’s what I’ve found out through my troubleshooting:

    1. The noise is present on any and all audio as long as any video track is also playing on the timeline. If the video ends, the noise ends–even if the soundtrack itself continues. That’s a key finding, because the audio noise is only present when it plays next to a video clip (any video clip).

    2. The noise is present only if I have “preview to external monitor” checked. If I uncheck it during playback, the noise is gone.

    3. It does not matter whether the external monitor is even switched on. The noise is still there when it’s off.

    4. If I play the same sound clip without its accompanying video track, the sound is perfect.

In other words, as the cursor sweeps over the video portion, the audio starts crackling. The video is causing the audio noise, I think. If the video ends before the sound, the noise goes away. And if I switch off the external preview, the noise is gone, no matter what!

I’m using KRK reference monitors with balanced cables from my M-Audio Audiophile 192 card.

This problem began with my update to Vegas 6 from Vegas 5. With all the same components, the sound was fine with Vegas 5.

I would appreciate any suggestions. I’m puzzled.

    Thanks.

Is your sound card and firewire card sharing resources? Can you move the firewire card to a different slot and see if it still does that?

I agree. Sounds like a hardware problem/conflict to me. Or maybe a frequency setting problem on the soundcard driver.

Thanks, guys, for the suggestions. I’ll take a look at possible resource conflicts. BUT if that were the case, wouldn’t I have experienced the problem with Vegas 5?

Also, the problem occurs ONLY if I have the external-device-preview checked. Wouldn’t a conflict cause a problem all the time?

Anyway, I’ll work on your suggestions today.

    Thanks.

you might compare the playback buffer settings and other audio setting in V 5 compared to V 6 settings ..

Is your Project Audio settings the same as your Audio Media? I had a sampling crackling/static issue when I had set the Project at 48 and but the media was at 44.

It’s good news and bad news time.

    The GOOD news:
OK, the sound problem is solved. After reformatting all my drives and reinstalling EVERYTHING, the sound is now perfect. What was wrong? No idea.

    The BAD news:
Vegas 6.0 hangs and crashes every few minutes (see my other posting). So as I work on that problem, at least my clips will sound good until I have to start-up Vegas all over again.

Just when I was thinking that things couldn’t be worse, the air-condiioning in my studio quit working, so I got to work on my computer in a 95-degree room. Life is good.

I had the same problem and tried everything. What worked was that I opened the effects on the music track and erased them all. The 3 effects that were automatically put in place where the reason for the tracking going haywire. Try that.
