  • “2) go to project media and right click on clip ( in TL) and select “file format properties”

to be clear it is the NAME of the clip that is in TL you are looking for in Project Media = you right click on the name of the clip inside Project media and select file format properties

  • you need to find the pull down !!.. if you captured whole tape – then you hope the telecine transferred all the 16mm without stopping the machcine to adjust color – if they did stop it during the transfer then the pull down has a very good chance of not being continuous = the pull down cadence will change where ever they stopped to adjust color ..

here’s how you get rid of pull down ( you do not de interlace it) and it’s totally different then if the clips came from DVX ..

your clip must be a avi ( no QT, mpeg etc) set your project properties to template =NTSC DV 24p 23.975, field order= NONE, film rate =23.976, deinterlace method = NONE ..

make sure you have “Project Media” checked under Vegas VIEW .. vegas ruler set to 23.976..

1)drop clip into TL – zoom into TL so that you can advance curser one frame at a time …
    2) go to project media and right click on clip ( in TL) and select “file format properties”
    3) check the box “enable 2-3 pulldown removal” it should be set to 0
4)start at beginning of clip and manually advance one frame at a time – if you see any interlacing then it is NOT correct ( you can see better if you set the vegas preview to FULL )
    5) if you saw interlacing then go to #3 and now change 0 to 1
repeat 3 & 4 till you have NO interlace frames while you advance one frame at a time .. once you have gone about 10 frame and see no interlacing then that # is correct ..drop a marker in TL and type in the correct number (0-4) …

    6) now go down the TL 4-5 min and manually advance one frame at a time – if you see interlacing then you know the telecine machine was stopped and restarted and you need to find the new pull down ( repeat 3 & 4)
and you need to find out where it changes the cadence by finding the end of the correct cadence ( go thru clip one frame at a time = use the right arrow key ) … each time you find the start of a new cadence be sure to drop in a marker with that number …

at the end you can either render out each cadence to a new clip or get the i/o time code of each cadence and recapture ..

if you broke the capture into individual shots then you just find the correct pull down removal number for each…

CAUTION !! note: when you enable remove pull down it is windows for video that is removing pull down NOT vegas so once you enable remove pull down it will remove pull down ALL the time not just in the current Vegas project but any project you drop the clip into = so if you use a clip 2 months from now in a 29.97 project windows will remove the pull down and then Vegas will see the clip as a 23.976 add pull down to equal 29.97= eats up CPU .. you can uncheck the remove pull down from any vegas project ( but remember it then goes back to 29.97 in ALL projects that the clip is used …

September 2, 2006 at 6:59 pm in reply to: 2K film output

i have a project that was scanned 10bit 2k res ..also contains some 10 bit 1920×1080 (inverse anamorphic) 23.976 clips
i made lo res ( DV template) copy of files – now editing ..

modify a existing Vegas template for the 2k files or when you render out to 2k … take the HD 60i 1080 1920×1080 template then go into the template and manually change the 1920 & 1080 setting to 2k pixels setting .. then change the framet rate to 23.976 ( if you are working with frames then you can use 24fps)and change field order to progressive ..

what i have noticed – my 2k & HD files are 10 bit – IMO 8 bit rendering isn’t doing it for one of my projects ( very dark B&W scenes – lots of dark tones ) .. the other project is bright daylight and 8 bit is no problem …if i do a film out on either project i will online ( final render) on a 10/16 bit capable program ..

  • in general i have found that a 100 network is NOT being used to its capacity when i use 3 NRS computers ( 2.4 PIV, 2 PIV , 3700amd) ..

the 3 computers do render out very fast (50-60 less then single computer) but by the time it takes to stitch the segments together it’s about equal to single comuter rendering … now 6 computers using NRS and you’ll cut some time ..
i don’t do much NRS rendering using mulitple computers anymore – i find assigning each computer a single job using NRS works better for my workflow ..

i don’t have V movie studio so don’t know if it works with 264 ..
in general -Vegas – if the format isn’t in the templates then you take the closest template and modify it … so if sorenson3 comes close but the 3Mbps isn’t doing it for you then click on CUSTOM – Video – then change the “target rate ” from 360 ( whatever # is on window) to 500 or 700 (Kbytes)

you must have QT7 installed for it (qt) to use 264 – from my experience QT6 doesn’t do it ..

June 29, 2006 at 4:38 pm in reply to: 20% velocity and supersampling questions

try a short test on the slo-mo sections before using super sampling

    1) right click on the slo mo section in TL – properties and check the box force resample ..render or use ram preview
    2) again right click properties and this time choose do not resample.
render out or use ram preview

or if you have a fast CPU – on the vegas preveiw screen -when you use preview auto/full that is using do not resample …. good & best auto/full is using resample … if your CPU is not fast enough to playback 29.97 then zoom into TL so when you use the right arrow you advance one frame at a time then hold down the right arrow and look at preview window …

i find sometimes i like the resample and other times no resample – just depends on the clips …
