  • Clip limit in Vegas 4.0?

Posted by Scott W on May 4, 2005 at 7:56 pm

I’m working with a large project in 4.0 and didn’t nest all the clips in separate bins. I did however remove all of the unused clips (@430) from the project and the exeternal (250 MB) harddrive. Now my Issue is downloading more footage. My one hour of footage is just one clip instead of where the camera stopped and started. I have tried opening another project with the same result one hour long clips. Other tapes yet to be captured I have the same result. I have used Vegas for many short projects with great success and never had this happen. Of course I also haven’t had as much raw footage before. However, this is the first feature length project I have attemped on this NLE. I need this to work because the project was shot on a Panasonic DVX-100 in 24p. The look of this project is great on Vegas and half the rough cut completed. Help

You have one huge captured 24GB file you are getting your
    cuts from?

What O/S and file system are you using?

    2000 or XP?

    FAT32 or NTFS?

    What exactly are you saying?

You cannot import more than 1 hour worth of footage
if a captured clip exceeds 1 hour?

if you want Vegas to break up the hour clip into smaller clips based on when you hit record/stop on camera –

in the Vegas capture utility – go to options – preference then hit the capture tab and check the box ENABLE DV SCENE DETECTION

It is enabled. I never changed the default settings in the capture preferences, except for the pulldown rate to 24.000 film. To answer some of Boris’ Q? I’m running on XP. THe entire one hour tape is loading onto the system as one clip instead of Enableing DV scene detection which is checked. Is it a question of Disk management? “Overflow when disk space is below (MB); the default setting is 360, there is 26% of free space on my 250MB external drive. and if I lower the 360 to 200 the estimated capture time available increases. Any Ideas?

Is maximum size per dv clip enabled? I always uncheck that.

So when your trying to capture another clip what happens?

Does it just fail with an error?

What’s the error msg if your getting one?

If you’ve got room to capture video there’s some other setting
that isn’t right. That has to be it IMO.

try looking at the camera ?
there are different TC’s on the camera ..
perhaps it does not have the date/time set to record to tape( i think scene detection uses the time of day )
also make sure the camera is set to drop frame.

No maximum set and no error message.

The tapes were striped before recording and the TC on the tape is sequencial. I’ve broke out the camera book and I don’t see what I did different between tapes. One take of a scene was shot on the previous tape another was shot on the next. Nothing changed in the settings between tapes maybe during some downloading something was shifted any idea what? Camera Is a Panasonic DVX-100.

[Scott W] “My one hour of footage is just one clip instead of where the camera stopped and started.”

First, go back and look at the CAMERA. Is the clock set on the camera? If no, that’s your problem and you’ll need to use “advanced capture” if you want capture different segments as different files.

The only error that occured was during editing it suddenly shut down and reopened under the recovered version that was renamed with a different title. Does this help?
