I’m surprised Graeme didn’t pitch his filters to you, they are mostly must-haves, especially Big Box of Tricks.

Eureka! are also great, and Joe’s Filters.

If you have the cash, look at Boris Continuum Complete.

FWIW, I have a LaCie Big Disk Extreme as a backup disk, and the other day accidentally opened the backup file of a 720p project on it with 1080i ProRes media and made a few changes, it played everything fine. My system is a G5 2 gig dual with 4.5 gigs RAM, Kona LH and an X 800XT graphics card.

So, maybe not the ideal situation, but in a pinch, it might work.

There are a number of decent monitors for your shooting that cost less than 3000 bucks. This was in DV magazine last month. https://www.dv.com/dv/magazine/2008/February/DV0208_InstantExpert.pdf

Personally, I use a Sony 17″ 720p multi-format monitor when I shoot with my Canon A1, it cost $600 at Fry’s. I have never had a focus or exposure issue when using this monitor.

Compressor can do the cross-conversion just fine, but you should do some short tests, and you should view on at least a 23″ Apple Cinema Display with your video output set to “Cinema display full screen”

An MXO or a real HD monitor would be even better.

When you do your Compressor tests, turn on the frame controls and boost antialiasing to say 50 or so. It will take a lot longer but it works fine.

You should be able to find something local in your Yellow Pages. There are a few places around here that do exactly what you want, so you must have them too.

The canvas does not display both fields unless it’s at 100%, and even then it is not the place to be judging quality. You need an HD monitor or a card which can downconvert it such as a Kona.

You likely have timecode breaks. Best remedy is to dub the tape over to a new one with new TC.

I duplicated your issue on my MacBook Pro, which is connected to my deck via FireWire. I tried every permutation to get it to work, same problem, still only. I tried 23.98 fooatage 24p footage, nothing worked.

BUT, if you set external video to “cinema desktop display-full screen” it will play in real time on an ACD. this the only thing that worked.

Hmmm, I have noticed this too, so I stopped using them on broadcast jobs. Seem to be okay on DVDs etc.
