I am in the planning stage of upgrading one of by edit bays. All bays are FCP Studio 2. We just received our Sony EX1 (fantastic) and are going to begin shooting all our commercial footage in HD and for the time being down converting. The TV stations here in Memphis still request Beta SP and sometimes we must capture from a client’s Beta. After the camera purchase, etc., I have $5000.00 left to purchase the remaining components.
    1. AJA or Blackmagic and which model?
    2. A dedicated program monitor or an LCD computer monitor (Dell or Apple) which will address both needs?
    3. Do I need field monitor or can I still use my SD Sony field monitor for a while?
    4. I’m sure that I’ve forgotten something so anything else you can think of is appreciated.

By the way, we used the EX1 yesterday for the first time. We shot 12 testimonials for some TV spots we are going to produce. We shot everyone in front of a portable green screen and even shooting in 720p 30, the footage keys beautifully, but much better at 1080p. How can image quality get any better than this?

    Thank you in advance.

[Jonny Filsinger] “1. AJA or Blackmagic and which model?”

What are your capture and output needs? The model of card you get depends on what your needs are. Look at both websites and see what they both have to offer.

[Jonny Filsinger] “2. A dedicated program monitor or an LCD computer monitor (Dell or Apple) which will address both needs?”

Both needs? You mean as computer monitor and HD reference monitor? Well, not really. The only option I can recommend for that is two Apple 23″ displays, with one connected to a Matrox MXO as only the MXO can turn the Apple monitor into a color correction monitor. But the MXO is output only, not capture. But since you have the EX1, you have no need to capture, it is imported via a card. So this might be a great solution for you. And it downconverts as you output, so you have that option.

[Jonny Filsinger] “3. Do I need field monitor or can I still use my SD Sony field monitor for a while?”

If you are shooting HD, then you need an HD monitor if you want to see an accurate representation of what you are getting from your camera. The Panasonic 17″ HD LCD is good as both a field monitor and edit reference monitor. But that costs $4000…4/5ths of your budget. And the MXO/Apple monitor will not work in this situation.

    Jonny,

There are a number of decent monitors for your shooting that cost less than 3000 bucks. This was in DV magazine last month. https://www.dv.com/dv/magazine/2008/February/DV0208_InstantExpert.pdf

Personally, I use a Sony 17″ 720p multi-format monitor when I shoot with my Canon A1, it cost $600 at Fry’s. I have never had a focus or exposure issue when using this monitor.

    Have a wonderful day.
