I run into this all the time, if I re-render out of AE and the length is different is the usual reason. I’m always moving the length markers to render just the short section I’m working on, and they never go back exactly. What I do is force the connection and it usually works fine.

In addition to what Walter said I would suspect some metadata may be involved.

I’ll tell you what blows, is that 2 months ago I dropped 400 bucks on a Toshiba A30, that’s what blows!

FWIW I checked the Partition scheme on my two machines at home on which the repair permissions work, one is on Leopard and one is on Tiger, and they both say “Apple Partition Map.”

When I go into the office on the machine that doesn’t work, I will check it and report back.

You should CLONE your drive before you do a clean install. Use Carbon Copy or Super Duper, both are free or a small donation. You will be cloning root items I don’t believe Time Machine can touch. It is very different from backup. You need a FireWire or USB drive, preferably empty on which to put your clone. You can boot from this if your re-install goes haywire.

There are a boatload of posts here regarding cloning, I suggest you do a search, very valuable info.

I started at a new place this week with a MacPro 2.66 running Leopard, and I began noticing some buggy behavior in FCP and in the OS in general, sometimes folders in the archives would not show without a restart, etc. so I tried repairing permissions and got the exact same error.

Tried booting from the install disk and repairing permissions and got the same error, upon calling AppleCare they said time for a complete re-install of the whole system, so I did a backup today and I’m going to do a complete re-install this weekend. Thank god it’s raining, would rather be playing golf!

I will report back on Monday, remember, clone your disc before you do anything drastic.

The long and short of it is, HDV is a great cheap acquisition format, but that’s where it ends. Before ProRes, I was using FireWire acquired native HDV and using it in an 8 bit or DVCPro HD timeline, all you have to do then is render, no conforming.

So you don’t have to recapture, you can change your sequence settings to 8 bit or ProRes, and just render the whole thing, should look great.

Or, just build a fresh project in one of those formats, and bring in all your footage. Don’t let FCP change the sequence settings when you drag in the first clip, and you’re set.

There are several ways to do this. normally I would do it in Compressor, it will detect that your movie is 16×9, (make a self-contained QuickTime movie from FCP at your project settings, not QT conversion) and then in the inspector you could force letterboxing, OR make an uncompressed D1 sequence in your project and put the 1080 comp into it, it will letterbox automatically, just make sure your field order is correct. Then export that movie and you can encode in DVDSP or Compressor or whatever.

I do my Spanish titles in FCP, I always have the script in Spanish in Word, and copy and paste into any text tool in FCP, all the accents etc. come in.

Export your movie uncompressed 8 or 10 bitb or ProRes.

Another vote for AE. FCPs keyframing is just awful. and not just for the easing method.

We need to hammer at Apple to fix this, instead of adding glitz to the Studio that is just cosmetic. Let’s have some basic functionality here!

I had several jobs last year that had to be done n an editor, due to budget constraints, we need to be able to do simple compositing in FCP.

Hey Joe,

Graeme’s filters render pretty fast, but you may want to look at the FX factory if speed is an issue. There are some pretty cool effects in there. I don’t see much of a speed increase in 6, and yes, they all should work fine with HDV, but you should look at the options as there are a number of good workflows working with HDV, so check the archives.
