  • How does FCP know when a reconnected clip is incorrect?

Posted by Eric Brodeur on February 16, 2008 at 7:52 am

Like some others my project is having issues with reconnecting clips. It doesn’t help that we inherited this project with media files being in a state of utter chaos. But I digress…

It’s become apparent we have duplicate clips which have slightly different attributes (Media Start/End, Reel No., etc.). When FCP goes to reconnect a clip we must often tell it which one and it reports back errors – presumably the clip attributes in the project don’t match the QuickTime file.

How does FCP know this? I’m guessing there is metadata stored in the QT file which is compared against the clip attributes.

QuickTime Player allows me to view some of the attributes such as media in, out but where does it store Reel #?

Any light you can shed on the reconnect procedure is appreciated.

FCP works by the name of the file and the timecode within. If you have two clips with the exact same name, FCP will go with the first one it finds.

Organization in Final Cut Pro is paramount above all else or you run into issues like this.

    Eric,

I run into this all the time, if I re-render out of AE and the length is different is the usual reason. I’m always moving the length markers to render just the short section I’m working on, and they never go back exactly. What I do is force the connection and it usually works fine.

In addition to what Walter said I would suspect some metadata may be involved.

    Have a wonderful day.
