I think I know what is wrong. Part of this is “counter-intuitive”. The trip BACK to the camera is not the same as when you downloaded FROM the camera (why Panasonic -why?).
When you are downloading FROM the camera you put the cam into the “1394 Device” mode and the camera’s P2 cards show up on the desktop.
This is NOT what you do when moving movies BACK to the camera. Refer to my earlier instructions and put your camera in the MCR mode (where you see the thumbnails) and then push the button on top of the camera called “Audio Dub / Thumbnail”. This will make the thumbnails disappear but will NOT put the P2 card icons on the desktop. This now is the mode you want the camera to be when you tell Final Cut to “print to video”.
That should do it for you.
If not, please call me at 316 634 1166 and I’ll walk you through it.

June 30, 2006 at 1:21 am in reply to: Using the Marker to delete clips

[doka15] “I just don;t know how to delete them in one mass delete.”

OK. After you have selected them initially with the Marker tag while you are shooting, you go to the MCR mode and hit the menu button and go to “thumbnail”; click the “set” button (it is also the “Pause” button) and it will take you to a list of selection possibilities. You scroll down to the “Marked Clips” and then hit your “set” button again. That will put all the “Marked” thumbnails in the window. Now you hit the Menu button again and go to “Operation”; click the “set” button again and you will see “delete”. Click the “delete” with your “set” button and it will ask you if you want to delete all “X” clips. You will note that this X will be the number of the clips you have “Marked”. When you say “Yes”, all the marked clips will be deleted.
That sounds like a mass delete to me and I use it all the time.

You didn’t say if you were using Final Cut Pro – but if you are – it couldn’t be easier. I do it all the time to take spots edited in 480i to a place where I transfer them to BetaCam for airing in our market.
All you do is put the camera in MCR mode; push the button “audio dub / thumbnail” once to make the thumbnails go away and then in the Final Cut “File” menu go to “Print to Video” and set up your bars and slate or whatever you want it to do. Make sure you have the radio button “Automatically Start Recording” selected and hit go.

  • [paul] “Im not sure I understand what you mean by the in points…..you mean eyeball something in the footage and create an in point using FCP then pick use in points for multiclip function?….”

Maybe I misunderstood when you said “.has like 100 clips for each camera angle…”. I assumed you mean that each camera was stopping and starting each time they grabbed a shot and therefore generated 100 clips from each angle that you could not conform linearly. IF that is the case, then you look at the “In” points or “starting” timecode of each clip and order them that way and then they will all be in the correct order of the event.

If that is not what happened then I suspect the Firestore “thought” that is what happened and broke your piece into “100 clips” and you still might be able to do the same thing.
Yesterday I read on another forum that there is reason to believe there are bad firewire cables being sold that allow external RF to intrude on the signal thus corrupting the stream. The guy suggested some kind of “solid core” cables or something as a fix – that’s all I remember about the thread. I think it is on the “2-Pop” forum site. Do a search for Firestore and you should find it if you want.

    Here’s a thought for you.
A few years back I edited a “live” music video that I shot with one camera in a club over the space of three nights of performances. From that I took three of their songs I liked and re-synched the video over their STUDIO recordings of the band with some “live” audio mixed in. People did not know. Even when I told them what I did they did not see what I was talking about AND this is regardless that the tempo of the live performance was quite different than it was in the studio.
If your guys shot reaction shots of the crowd and action shots of the drummer and other players when they are not singing you can cover loads. You just need a clean audio track (or one you can patch together). For instance, almost nobody knows what a guitar player is playing with their chord hand as long as the “strum” hand is in synch. Slo-mo and efx are in order also.

Don’t give up. You can do it.

  • [paul] “there are really weird glitches in some of the clips…digital break ups…..and even some weird thing where the shot gets flopped back and forth??!!!!”

Boy, I don’t know about that stuff. It sounds like something is wrong with the Firestore system. I never have anything like that happen with straight p2 recording and downloading to FCP.

The other problem’s fix is fairly easy, though.

In order to sequence the cuts back to their original shooting order you import them into FCP and then in the logging bin you order them by their “inpoint” timecodes rather than the default ordering by name which will make you crazy.
(somebody else in this forum gave me this workaround and it solved the problem for me)

[doka15] “Wow that will change my shooting style. To have to remember to hit that button before I stop rolling.”

Yeah, that is the key. Because I only have 2x4gig cards right now, I have been shooting much tighter than I was when I shot with 2 hour DVCAM tapes and I am conscious of every second of roll time. I just have to “train” my mind not to worry about continuing to roll as I look for the marker button because the “lost” roll time will all be “redeemed” space on the P2 as soon as I erase it anyway.

Even though I have limited record time right now I like the immediacy of the P2 system and am fine with it for shooting one or two spots at a time in 480i. It will only get better as memory prices get lower.

If you have any trouble figuring how to set up the user button, let me know and I’ll run you through it.

[doka15] “After I shoot a clip do I just press a button to add a marker to that clip I just captured?”

What I did was program the marker function on to one of the “user defined” buttons on the lower left side of the camera.
The thing is though, you have to change your shooting style and continue to roll on a “bad” take and then hit the marker button before you stop rolling.
Then, when you have a down moment on the set, you go to the MCR mode and “collect” all the marked takes and erase them.
It works great but like I said if you’re like me you have to change your shooting style and remember to mark a bad take before you stop the camera.

  • [paul nevison] “looking at the HVX and firestore for a “gun and run” style doco shoot.”

I have a 200 and like it a lot but am also somewhat hamstrung by the short recording time on my 2 x 4gig P2 cards. This has become more evident since I am now convinced that I get a better picture for SD by shooting 720 60p and vignetting. Thus my recording time is only 8 minutes at 720.
#1. Where did you get the FS-100? I talked to 4 places today and none of them had machines in stock.
#2. The retailers I have spoken to have said they “thought” there is a mount for the FS-100 that uses the shoe on the top of the camera handle. One retailer thought it comes with the FS. Any comment?
#3. Has anyone seen any cables with “elbow” ends for the little firewire plug that connects to the camera? They would be easier to safety with velkro.

March 15, 2006 at 1:48 pm in reply to: HVX200 Greenscreeen experience?

    [B.J. Ahlen]
Has anyone tested how well HVX200 footage keys when shot in a properly lit studio environment?”

I have had my 200 for a little over a month and done about 5 greenscreen shoots. I use a Chromaflex system and get good results. I got the 200 to replace my Sony DSR-250 DVCAM machine and the 200 keys a lot better. I like to use Motion2 with key software called DV Matte Blast by DV Garage. It works really well.
The 200 produces a better picture with better edges than DVCAM for sure.

Overall I like the camera a lot but they should have put louvered doors for a lens cap like Sony did with their HDV camera instead of sticking us with a barn door to carry around. It won’t even fit in your pocket…
