Delete last clip
Posted by Lars Wikstrom on June 9, 2006 at 6:14 amI see the camera has a check last record feature which plays back the last few seconds of a clip you just shot. Is there a delete last clip button I don’t know about? Some time I mess up a shot and just want to delete it with out having to jump through all the hoops of setting the camera in playback mode.

June 9, 2006 at 10:13 amSorry, you have to go through the hoopla of erasing it the hard way. Too many accidents might happen if it were too easy.

June 9, 2006 at 9:12 pmNext version of the camera you should have that. You don’t have to have it in an easy to push place but after I’ve used the camera for a few weeks now it really is a must have for me. I wound up with about 92 clips for a 30 second spot and about 20 of those I would have deleted right after I shot it. But because it is so time consuming when you are shooting to have to switch over to VTR mode to delete I don’t and I end up with many more shots that I have to filter threw. I have another question but I will start a new thread for ingest of media.
Thanks.

June 10, 2006 at 6:31 amI can see why Panasonic wouldn’t want to make it even easier to delete clips, so how about an alternative… how about using the shot mark or text memo button to mark clips that you intend to delete? Instead of using the shot mark as a “keeper”, you could use it as a “no good” button. As soon as you shoot it and you know it’s no good, press the shot mark button. Then when you have a couple of minutes between takes you can toggle over to playback mode, choose to show only marked clips, then select and delete them all in one quick step.

June 10, 2006 at 9:33 amThat might be a good work around. The marker clip was a little confusing when I read it in the manual. After I shoot a clip do I just press a button to add a marker to that clip I just captured?

What I did was program the marker function on to one of the “user defined” buttons on the lower left side of the camera.
The thing is though, you have to change your shooting style and continue to roll on a “bad” take and then hit the marker button before you stop rolling.
Then, when you have a down moment on the set, you go to the MCR mode and “collect” all the marked takes and erase them.
It works great but like I said if you’re like me you have to change your shooting style and remember to mark a bad take before you stop the camera.Brian FitzGerald

June 10, 2006 at 5:20 pmWow that will change my shooting style. To have to remember to hit that button before I stop rolling. It feel like Panasonic is trying to over protect you from deleting clips to where it becomes a real time consuming event to sort out and delete them.
When I read that post last week or so about a guy deleting his shots and wanting to unerase them, I though, There is no way that can be an accidental thing.
Panny should update the firmware in the camera to allow you to use the “Check Last Rec.” button to be used to delete the last clip if you select it in the menu. With an “Are you sure?” Y/N button to protect against an accidental erasing. That should cover this headache.
When I end up with 92 takes an half are what I want. It takes me longer to sort through and toss out the bad ones then it did to just log and capture from DV the old way.
But it’s a brave new world and I might just have to adjust my shooting style for now till Panny makes it a little easier agaain, I hope 🙂

Yeah, that is the key. Because I only have 2x4gig cards right now, I have been shooting much tighter than I was when I shot with 2 hour DVCAM tapes and I am conscious of every second of roll time. I just have to “train” my mind not to worry about continuing to roll as I look for the marker button because the “lost” roll time will all be “redeemed” space on the P2 as soon as I erase it anyway.
Even though I have limited record time right now I like the immediacy of the P2 system and am fine with it for shooting one or two spots at a time in 480i. It will only get better as memory prices get lower.
If you have any trouble figuring how to set up the user button, let me know and I’ll run you through it.

June 12, 2006 at 5:50 amHey thanks, I will look through the manual and try to set it up and do some tests. The Manual seems a little sketchy in some areas and much of it is new to me.
