If you can, convert your avchd footage to match your DVCPro HD footage.”

Well, I brought it (the AVCHD footage) out of the camera to the hard drive as “Apple Intermediate” and it actually works that way in the timeline w/o needing to render. Isn’t that what I want?

Thanks for the quick reply. But. Perhaps you could amplify a little about what you mean “correct”. I don’t see any options for the Log and Transfer input when bringing in P2. What am I missing there?

Now regarding the FS-100, I will say that I have been recording in the field as Quicktime. Then I transfer these files to my workstation hard drive by just dragging them over from FS-100 (hard drive) to my FW800 drives like one would do any other file copy. Perhaps that is not advised…

Regardless, neither the P2 files nor the FS-100 Quicktime files go on the sequence timeline w/o the red render bar. The Sequence is set to:
    Frame size 1280 x 1080
    Pixel aspect 1280 x 1080
    Compressor DVCPro HD 1080i60
The Video Processing tab is defaulting to “Render in 8 bit YUV”

December 28, 2006 at 1:51 pm in reply to: Straight-to-MacBook Pro with HVX200

If you want to save a few beans you can do the same thing with the regular MacBook. I bought the white one with the 13″ screen just for this purpose. Although not necessary for the purpose, I replaced the standard 5300rpm drive with an aftermarket 7200rpm drive and put the 5300 into an outboard USB/Firewire enclosure that is powered by the bus.
It all works great and the MacBook with all the additional capabilities of a computer was only $1440 versus the Firestore at much more cost with only 60gb of storage and “single use” capability.

Unhappy isn’t the word for it. This grief has become a way of life. It seems like the last three or so Macs I have bought were updated within a month to either higher ghz or more processors FOR THE SAME MONEY.
The most recent is a MacBook I just got a month ago and now they offer the same MacBook for the same money with Dual Dual Core processors.
I have been buying Apple computers (and these modern cameras are just computers) for 21 years, religiously upgrading every 12 to 18 months and get caught about every 4th time.
At least in the car business they inform you they are about to go to a new model year. Computer makers know damn well they are about to introduce a new updated model of what you are buying but don’t have the decency to admit it. They prefer to sting you and take the abuse because they have a pretty well cornered market.
Don’t get me talking about software update charges…..

ps: to top it off I just dropped $1100 on an 8 gig P2 that it looks like I should have gotten free.

I am talking about whites – the maximum luminance in your picture frame. It should be at 100%.
You sound like you come from a film background and are confusing terms. When you say:

“WoW if your shooting at 100% That Crazy shooting with the hvx200 at 75% should be the correct target. personaly iv got better resalts underexposing then over.. and iv never been able to save an overexposed shot in FCP.”

I’m not really sure what you are talking about. You don’t “expose” in video; you control your levels by metering white levels. They should be 100%.

From what I could discern, the original post in the thread was complaining about what one experienced in video would call “a muddy looking shot”. That is always from running the level too low. If you guys are running your WHITE levels significantly under 100% that is what you will get.

    This is like Video 101.

    Study up.

I don’t understand why you guys are metering for such low values. Without getting into the area of “superwhite” and all that stuff, video has always used white at 100% (or, in some places 95%). Granted you can push it a little (“crush the whites”, to say, 105%) but 100% is one of the standard reference points of the signal, the other being pedestal or black level (which can also be allowed adjustment from 0% to maybe 10% these days).
If you are metering whites at 60% – 80% you are naturally going to end up with an “under-exposed” shot.
Try popping it up to 100% and see what happens.
I have been shooting with this cam for about 8 months now (with FCP as my edit environ) and I can tell you there is no shift in the transfer. I will say, though, that you cannot trust the LCD or eyepiece monitor of the 200 for nuances. I have also noticed a disturbing if occasional tendency when shooting 720p in Automatic that it tends to meter very low. When that happens I see the dreary look I think you guys are talking about. But, when that happens I switch to Manual Mode and everything looks just fine.
    Try 100% crosshatch.

October 5, 2006 at 11:52 pm in reply to: P2 or Firestore?

    Dear Chris,
I want to thank you for the detailed and carefully written post you made on the Firestore. I have been pondering the purchase of said machine for some months now and was within days of tripping the switch but your post and a couple of concurring others have convinced me to go the P2 Store route.
I’m sorry to hear you got tagged in the wallet but appreciate you giving me the “heads-up”.
What I think was most useful (and what should be a positive lesson to others) is that you didn’t just spout off that so often heard these days “it’s a piece of s__t” style of useless rhetoric. Your evaluation was very professional and thus of enormous value.

I use Final Cut with the HVX and use Macs for every aspect of this biz from compositing to 3D to scripting to accounting. There are no problems with Macs.
