No, it’s quite the other way around. The CAC function is designed to overcome the low-cost nature of the lens. It’s a high-end function, which is why Panasonic is putting it on their top-of-the-line HPX3000 too.
HD glass is designed to resolve at least 85lp/mm, but if the chromatic aberrations aren’t corrected out you’ll get a lot of green & purple fringing. Top-end glass undergoes an extensive, slow, and expensive multicoating process to optically correct all those aberrations, to get the lens to focus the red and blue wavelengths at the same point in space. The CAC lenses forego that expensive multicoating process, instead feeding the lens position/focal length/iris setting info to the DSP in the camera body. The camera body then references the internal “lens file” which has all the properties of the lens mapped out, and it then knows that based on the focus/iris/focal length combination that certain aberrations will have been introduced by the lens. It digitally compensates for those aberrations.
As such, you can get great aberration-free performance from lenses that haven’t undergone the extensive coating process to optically correct for the aberrations. According to a Fujinon rep I talked to, the glass is the same. The sharpness and MTF are the same. The difference is in aberration performance. If they take the time and effort to correct the performance optically through coatings, that lens will work on every camera body and perform predictably and optimally, and it’ll cost a fortune. If they ignore that process and instead rely on the camera to correct it digitally, you’ll get great performance on a CAC-equipped camera body at a tremendous cost savings. But you won’t get great performance on a non-CAC body; on a non-CAC body you’ll get notable green/purple fringing.

Look at the clip numbers; if they’re red, that means that you can’t play them in the current camera settings. Look to the lower left of the LCD display; it’ll tell you what format each clip was shot in. You then have to go back into camera mode to change the camera’s recording format to match the clips you’re trying to play back.

From my understanding it’s because the HPX3000 is an interlaced chipset. All their other cameras are using progressive-only chipsets, so 720/60p is easily possible from a progressive chip. But the HPX3000 is, I believe, an interlaced chipset, so no 720p mode.

HPX3000 doesn’t use AVC-HD anyway, it uses the new AVC-Intra codec. Entirely different, night-and-day different.

Chip sizes are referred to as “types”, so it’s a 1/3″ type CCD, but it doesn’t measure anywhere near 1/3″. No 1/3″ chip measures anywhere near 1/3″. No 1/2″ chip is 1/2″, and no 2/3″ chip is 2/3″ either.
The actual chip size isn’t a published spec, but I believe it’s in the ballpark of about 5.25mm x 2.95mm.

If you’re on an Intel Mac and have BootCamp installed, you can install the free Panasonic P2 Viewer and use that. Otherwise, yeah, P2 Log is the way to go.

For clarification, you need to download a DRIVER. You need the latest driver for your computer. All P2 devices need a driver update to work with the 16GB cards, so that includes your computer, your P2 Store, your camera, your PCD20, or anything that interfaces with a P2 card.

You haven’t lost anything. Just select that clip, go into the menus and choose “repair clip”. It’ll restore all the footage, with the possible exception of the last second or two.

Do you know for a fact that the firewire port on the HVX200 works? That it didn’t get “blown out” by hot-plugging into a six-pin firewire port on the computer?
I’m not sure what to tell you; firewire input definitely works on the HVX200, in all modes. You can firewire HD to it, or DV50, or DV. If your deck is configured to export DV, and the camera tape/p2 switch is set to “tape” mode, and the mode button is set to VCR, then it should be working.
