When shooting in the AVC and editing in FCP’s ProRes – is there any encoding necessary? Or is it just a matter of an FCP ‘wrapper’ being applied to the native file?

    Jan? Anyone?

If you are importing AVCHD into FCP using the Long and Transfer option, converting to ProRes or AIC, you are indeed CONVERTING the footage….it does not deal with AVCHD as a native codec like it does DVCPRO HD. So the footage will be converted to another codec for editing.

But they are both H264, what conversion is taking place?

ProRes and AIC are not h.264 codecs…AFAIK.

AVCHD is a format. Converting it to ProRes is CONVERTING it…because it is a different format. AIC…same thing…it is a different codec. Even if they are h.264 based (I am not a codec-head so I really have no idea if it is or not)…they are different variations…therefore conversion is taking place.

HPX3000 doesn’t use AVC-HD anyway, it uses the new AVC-Intra codec. Entirely different, night-and-day different.

OK – but I’m still confused – will FCP be able to edit the native AVC-Intra codec directly? It’s apparently not a variable bit rate codec such as ProRes is.

It doesn’t edit that format natively yet…and Apple is always mum about future features.

While I was at SMPTE in Sydney last week, I heard it from the horse’s mouth (or the apple’s core). Yes native AVC-Intra support is coming for FCP, and probably within the next few weeks. It is being worked on at this very moment.
