March 26, 2009 at 7:43 pm in reply to: P2 offload issues using new MacbookPro and Duel

Having looked into this issue a bit, it does seem like the problem is limited to 4GB systems. As Jesse found, pulling out 2GB (and thus turning it into a 2GB MBP) works.

Whether the problem is with Duel, or Apple, or Panasonic, or Imagine, that part hasn’t been figured out yet. But the problem definitely appears to be related to having 4GB of RAM. I know Panasonic and Duel are aware of that and are trying to figure out what the problem is.

In the meantime, to get up and running, you pretty much have two choices: either pull out 2GB (not exactly a preferred solution) or use the Terminal application to convince the operating system to limit itself to using only 2GB. And that seems the best practice, because you can swap over to “2GB” mode for your Duel usage, then swap back to “4GB” mode for everything else.

These are the instructions that I’ve had sent to me from a Mac user who says this will work, so I’m forwarding them on in hopes that it will help you guys out.

To Turn Your 4GB MBP Into A “virtual” 2GB MBP:
    1. Launch the Directory Utility from the Application->Utility Folder. Click the “key” icon to unlock it. Then click “Edit->Enable Root User.”

    2. Launch the Terminal program, from Application->Utility Folder. Then type in the following command: “sudo nvram boot-args=”maxmem=2048”

    3. Launch the Directory Utility again, and click the key icon to unlock it, then choose “Edit->Disable Root User”.

To Revert Back to Using All 4GB:
Follow all the steps above, but in step 2 you’d forget that “maxmem” line and instead type in this command in the Terminal program: “sudo nvram boot-args=””

March 26, 2009 at 7:18 pm in reply to: MXF Files…did not organize P2

CS3 version 3.2 or later has MXF support.

Do you have a lot of files? If you have the exact contents as they came off the FireStore, you can try renting an FS-100 and copying the files back and then running the “organize P2” step.

If that’s not an option, or there’s just a few files, you can try rescuing the files by following the steps in my FireStore Rescue article.

The HPX2100 is cleaner in noise and noticeably sharper. Of course, it’s also 2x to 3x the price.

May 7, 2008 at 8:52 pm in reply to: HVX200a vs. Sony EX1

[Michael Murray] “I heard that the EX1 is good in those conditions as well, how about the 200A? As good, better, worse?”

The EX1, in 1080p mode, is about 400 ISO. The HVX200A is 500 ISO. They have roughly comparable noise levels. So, yes, in 1080P mode, the HVX200A should be a match for the EX1 in low light (though neither is going to be as good as your PD170 was).

In 720p mode, both cameras are about 500 ISO.

In 1080i mode, the EX1 will hold a big advantage; it’s about 800 ISO vs. the HVX200A at about 400, so about one stop faster. So if you’re shooting progressive-scan, they’ll be about the same; if you’re shooting interlaced the EX1 will still hold an advantage.

February 8, 2008 at 11:24 pm in reply to: ND filter problems w/ HVX 200

[Emre Tufekci] “Since the HVX does not have a real aperture”

Why do you say that? Of course it has a real aperture. Doesn’t have the same control ring, but there’s a physical multi-bladed aperture in there.

[Emre Tufekci] “Now the 1/8 to 1/64 ND is a 2 stop decrease in exposure”

Actually the 1/8 is 3 stops, and the 1/64 is another 3 stops (so each filter position is like using a .9 ND).

Are you on a Mac? Do you mean P2 Viewer or the FCP import window?

February 8, 2008 at 3:46 am in reply to: HPX 500 and HPX 2000

Yes, the 2000 will have a slightly sharper image with less visible noise. And much more image tweakability (more in-depth menu controls). The 2000 also has lots of ENG-specific features that make it great as a news cam. The 500 has variable frame rates, the 2000 doesn’t.

February 6, 2008 at 6:08 pm in reply to: HVX-200 NAB rumors

[Lars Wikstrom] “Hey Barry, we’ll see about that. I went to buy an 8 gig when the 16’s replaced the 8’s price. The prices were still full price and not $500 when the old stock was begin sold off.”

Oops. I crossed wires between NAB 2006 and 2007. At NAB 2007 the announcement was made, the MSRP of 8GB cards dropped from $1200 to $700 (not $550) and the 16GB cards were introduced at $900.

At NAB 2006, the 4GB cards were dropped to an MSRP of $550. So while 550 isn’t 500, it has happened before that prices have been in the ballpark of $500.

I’m hoping that’ll happen again. But keep in mind the 8GB cards fell from $1200 to $700; the 16GB cards are already starting out at $900 so an equivalent price drop (hopefully at NAB 2008?) would put them right at about $500 or so.

February 5, 2008 at 5:49 pm in reply to: P2 question out of sheer ignorance

[Vincent Becquiot] “Premiere Pro CS3 can export back to P2. Not sure about the others.”

EDIUS Broadcast can export back to the cards as well.

Avid and FCP can “print to video” out the firewire port, and an HVX200, HPX500, P2 Gear or P2 Mobile can record the incoming firewire data stream on a P2 card.

February 5, 2008 at 5:47 pm in reply to: HVX-200 NAB rumors

[Lars Wikstrom] “Those all sound nice but the one thing that I can almost assure you is that you will never see P2 cards for $500 new.”

The 8GB card carried a list price of $550 before it was discontinued.

I expect the 16GB card to drop to $500 before too long.
