I know there have been a lot of posts on these two cameras, but I was wondering if there were any differences between the two regarding image quailty (all things being equal…no intra-codec but, using same lens, frame rate, etc.)?

Yes, the 2000 will have a slightly sharper image with less visible noise. And much more image tweakability (more in-depth menu controls). The 2000 also has lots of ENG-specific features that make it great as a news cam. The 500 has variable frame rates, the 2000 doesn’t.
