Are you sending it DV data? If the deck is outputting DV, and the camera’s receiving DV, it should definitely show up on the LCD. Try a different firewire cable maybe?

Sounds pathetically slow to me; I can transfer a 4GB card onto my laptop in about 2:15.

There’s a manual for the P2 viewer, and it’s already installed on your computer. It’s in PDF form. Look in the directory where you installed P2 Viewer and you’ll find a bunch of manuals in various languages. We also did a segment on the P2 Viewer in our HVX BootCamp DVD, vol. Abel Cine Tech and Specialized Communications both have the HPX500 body/viewfinder/tripod plate/4 cards package for about $13,500. But you’d get a warranty and be dealing with an actual authorized dealer, rather than a gray marketer like GMP.

Pros for the P2 cards: heat-proof, cold-proof, shock-proof, dust-proof, humidity-proof, silent, small, no need for a separate battery, no need to be cabled to the camera through a firewire port, can play back clips via thumbnails, can play back clips to a high-def monitor, can be used to immediately record and play back slow-mo, can attach P2 metadata, can edit six streams of HD right off the cards.
Cons for the FireStore: look at every item above, and add a “not”.
Pros for the FireStore: larger capacity for continuous recording than you could get from any one P2 card so far. Also, can record directly in Quicktime format, which can make for an easier import to FCP if you’re using FCP.
Cons for the P2 cards: they cost more per gig currently, and are in very short supply.

You can’t do the math like that though, because multiple streams will be located on different areas of the hard disk, and when the hard disk has to move its read head between the streams a tremendous amount of time is lost.

The European/Australian etc. HVX200E does 25p, but not 24p. The North American/Japanese version does 24p, but not 25p.

The only one on that first page you linked to that will work is the EXP34-DA-001, which is the same as the Duel Adapter.
The PCI-to-PCMCIA adapters will work, but those are only for desktop systems, not laptops. But yes those will work, and that $139 one claims to offer a front slot, so that’d be the best pick if it actually works!
