PCMCIA Card Readers
Posted by Shawn Miller on June 14, 2007 at 10:04 pmCan anyone tell me if it’s ppossible to use a non-Panasonic PCMCIA card readers with P2 cards? I would really like to add a single (or double) card reader to my main workstation, but I’m not sure if such a device would need a Panasonic driver to see the P2 card.
Thanks,
Shawn

June 14, 2007 at 10:14 pmTo read P2 cards, you either need a G4 Powerbook, PC laptop with PCMCIA slots, or the Panasonic readers. No off brand reader can read the P2 card format.

June 14, 2007 at 11:42 pmYou can get a $70 PCI->PCMCIA adapter that fits in the back of a workstation and allows using PCMCIA cards. The P2 cards would work in that, I’m sure, but I’ve only seen these products available for Windows systems, I don’t know if one exists for Mac desktops.

June 14, 2007 at 11:43 pm(and to further what Shane’s saying): no USB or firewire reader is going to work, other than the Panasonic ones. The direct PCI slot connection types will work in a desktop, or the Duel Adapter will work for an ExpressCard slot, but if you want to use USB or firewire then it has to be the Panasonic readers.

June 15, 2007 at 5:44 amThanks Barry,
I’m going to give it a try. I found some inexpensive card readers that have Mac and Windows drivers
https://www.synchrotech.com/products/card-rw_00.html
If it works, I’ll have a cheaper way to offload data from my P2 cards. If not, I won’t have spent a fortune to find out. 🙂
Thanks,
Shawn

June 15, 2007 at 2:20 pmRemember, an external must be 32-bit. I don’t see any there that are.
I also don’t see any PCI cards that are Mac compatible

It has to be installed into a PCI slot on a windows desktop.

June 15, 2007 at 4:07 pmAh quite right, thanks for pointing that out… but doing some quick searches, I found a few devices that might work:
https://www.psism.com/reader.htm#PCI
https://www.siig.com/product.asp?query=PCI+to+PC+Card-M&pid=982
I’m sure I can find more suitable hardware. Like I said, I’m going to give this a try and let everyone know if it works.
Thanks,
Shawn

June 15, 2007 at 4:49 pmThe only one on that first page you linked to that will work is the EXP34-DA-001, which is the same as the Duel Adapter.
The PCI-to-PCMCIA adapters will work, but those are only for desktop systems, not laptops. But yes those will work, and that $139 one claims to offer a front slot, so that’d be the best pick if it actually works!

June 18, 2007 at 9:18 pmShawn I’d like to know if the Mac PCI card adapter works as well. I wonder if there is also a extension cable that has a PCMCIA male on one side to go into the back of the tower and a PCMCIA female adapter on the front … so that you could insert and remove cards from the front of your workspace instead of behind the tower.
I just can’t believe there is no way to transfer content off the P2 cards via the camera’s firewire or usb2 ports. I have dne it through FCP capture window but that’s not at all what i’m trying to do…
Am I wrong? Is there some means of connecting the HPX500 or HVX200 to a laptop or tower and transfering content to other hard drives?
when do you expect to know about the SIIG PCI to PCMCIA adapter?
