Different type of product, different type of market, different purpose. It’s a little like saying that Cadillac can’t justify their prices based on the price of the new Cris Craft. OK, maybe not quite like that, but you get the picture.
And there’s no reason yet to believe that the Samsung product will (or won’t) be cheap:
“Samsung hasn’t announced the price of the 16GB drive yet, but the target markets for the product–military and industrial computing–are typically willing to pay a premium for technology.”
They also say that the form factor for the 16GB product will be similar to that of a 2.5″ hard drive, so we’re not going to see a Samsung p2 card for next year.

Firewire will always have issues with latency. It’s inherent in the technology. The digital signal has to move to whatever box is doing the AD conversion, & then it takes a few frames for the signal to get converted.
If you need a zero latency solution, you have to install a PCI card in your desktop. Look at AJA’s Kona, Auroara’s Pipe, or Black Magic’s Decklink.

Bing! You’re drive is too slow. FW drives have never been certified by Apple for use as capture drives. That doesn’t mean they never work, but many people have problems in specific situations that are fixed by using better drives. Also Maxtors don’t really have the best reputation as AV workhorses.
Do yourself a favor, buy the biggest internal SATA drive you can afford & use that as your scratch disk.

This probably has nothing to do with the version of QT you’re running, but it probably has everything to do with how you installed & uninstalled & reinstalled QT. Either do a search here, or go to the support section of Apple.com & look up the docs on uninstalling QT 7 & reinstalling QT 6.5.x.

I use Compressor all the time, & it works perfectly for me. Here’s a couple of suggestions:
1) Mixdown your audio in the timeline before outputting. It’s in the SEQUENCE>RENDER ONLY menu.
2) Export your audio directly from FCP as a separate file, then use that export to encode with aPack.Arnie

I’m mot trying to be cagey, but the best encoding settings vary from project to project.

Depends on your source material. DV is lower field 1st.

Depends on how much material (total # of minutes, including extras) is going on how big a disk.

No higher than 7 for disks being burned on a desktop. That assumes that you’re compressing your audio with aPack.

I’ve usually used PhotoShop for these. It’s just my habit, plus I know PS really well, & have a lot of control over what happens. And drop shadows & other text effects can be added in PS without slowing down your render times.
Just my personal preference, your milage may vary.

Well, it is. But you do need to log the head & tail of the tape, & you do need reasonably fast drives with ample free space for the material that you’re working with.
I captured an entire 3 hour DVCAM tape a week & a half ago, & delivered the project to my client this morning. The only hiccup was a TC break around 30 or 35 minutes in. FCP captured around the break without any problems. 2 big clips on an internal SATA, no synch problems, no dropped frames. Okay, 1 middling large clip, one really large clip. 🙂

And just a little bit scary. I still remember that one of their chips (the P3, perhaps?) didn’t do long division.
Still, if Apple retools the architecture to be more like standard PCs, that could have some really interesting possibilities… Mac OS for Wintel boxes… Cheaper high end graphics cards for Macs…
