  • Capture in 24p from XL2 drops frames — brand of tape at fault?

Posted by Travis Miller on June 28, 2005 at 3:50 am

Ok, I’m still trying to figure out the XL2 (I’ve only had it for about a week).
When I shoot in 24p (advanced pulldown) I have a really hard time capturing.
It will capture for about a second and then give me an error message and stop.
If I try to capture as non-controllable device it will give me some kind of timecode error.

I end up having to set FCP to capture as NTSC 29.97, non-controllable and use Cinema Tools’
reverse telecine to take the pulldown back out. I don’t think this is hurting quality, but it’s a pain.

I’m well aware of the age old debate about matching tape and
camera brands and the alleged problems that not doing so can cause.
I practiced that with my old panasonic because their tapes are easy to find.
However, Canon tapes really aren’t (and they aren’t cheap either).

I’ve been shooting on the panasonic tapes that I have left.
Could that have anything to do with this problem?
It almost acts like the head is dirty (which I have experienced with mixing tape brands in the past).
If I connect the camera to my monitor and play it directly though it looks flawless.

Any and all help is appreciated.
I have to leave tomorrow to shoot a big event for the weekend and would like to use 24p.
I just don’t want to have to deal with this headache when i get back.

    TIA,
    Travis

I don’t have any problems capturing what I’ve shot in 60i on the XL2 (haven’t tried 30p yet) or from my panasonic (SDV 60i).

Bing! You’re drive is too slow. FW drives have never been certified by Apple for use as capture drives. That doesn’t mean they never work, but many people have problems in specific situations that are fixed by using better drives. Also Maxtors don’t really have the best reputation as AV workhorses.

Do yourself a favor, buy the biggest internal SATA drive you can afford & use that as your scratch disk.

Ok, but that doesn’t really make much sense.
It captures just fine from 29.97 material, but not 24p (which actually has a lower data rate).

It’s a combination of things: Slow Processor + Slow drives = Poor performance on pulldown and dropped frames.

Apple doesn’t recommend FW drives whatsoever, so your mileage may vary if you are brave enough to use them in an unsupported configuration. Many people have good luck using them, but many don’t.

As much as you don’t like to hear it, Arnie’s advice is good. FireWire Drives = bad. Internal Drives = good. Work toward the most stable FCP system possible. A single proc/FW drive is probably not the most stable config to be honest.

If I were you, I’d just reverse telecine inside of CT. At least it’s a stable way to work that won’t waste your time in the long run.

I’m having the same issue capturing footage recorded at 24p Advanced on and XL2. I don’t think this is as simple as a hardware upgrade or just not capturing to a removable harddrive. I’m running a Dual 2GHz G5 with 2.5 GB DDR SDRAM, FCP 4.5. I’ve attempted to capture directly to the HD, RAID, and External Firewire drive and I get the same result everytime. The capture aborts after 3 seconds of capturing and gives the same error code:
Capture encounted a problem reading data on your source tape. This could be due to a problem with the tape. Capture has been aborted and your clip has been saved.

I’ve disabled all “abort capture” preferences, attempted to capture to all types of drives (local, raid, external). I’ve tried all NTSC easy setups and also tried a capture with a non-controlable device. I’ve captured using both Capture Now and Batch. I’ve even deleted my prefs. All tips and workarounds I’ve seen on Creative Cow have yeilded no solution. I’ve even tried duping my tapes but the dupe came out with artifacts (Sony DVCAM firewired to XL1 for duping).

This seems to be a bigger mystery that I had imagined. Rewards of fame to anyone who can crack this Da Vinci Code.
