    quote from SimonT
    “OK Eric here goes.
When I go to the COW website the top title etc loads straight away, then nothing for up to 5 mins then the rest of the page loads. Same for individual forums, the top left green box loads straight away then 5 minutes wait till rest of page loads eventually. Phil’s advice above of disabling javascript works and site then works at normal speed minus some of the adverts. Running Safari 2.0.4 on OSX 10.4.8”

    I echo all this info.

  • Yes, it’s relatively easy to achieve this effect to a good standard. However, the quality of the effect depends almost completely on the quality of the footage/stills that you obtain. There are many ways a good graphic artist can use AE to enhance decent footage, but there is no way crappy footage can be made to look like high-end commercial work.

Break down the shot you want; from beginning to end, then get the very best material you can for every stage. If you want to start on a person, is it footage or a still? If footage, is it real or from an animation packsge? Does the footage contain a zoom or will you have to do it in AE? Questions like this all the way through your sequence will give you the best results your budget/time allows. Be warned, if you want high-end results it will cost you. There is no way around this. I am constantly amazed (nothing personal; not aimed at you) at how some people expect the same quality they see in big-budget work but done on the cheap. Just doesn’t happen.

Good luck and let us know how you get on.

Don’t really understand what you’re saying. Your footage is not moving in z-space, your figure IN the footage is. Not the same. Like the man said, it’s a few minutes of roto, suck it up.

Now I feel stupid, that’s such an obvious answer… many thanks.

Many thanks M, I see the principle of it. And thanks for your recent tutorials, they are prompting me to explore C4D.

Also, often I see a 3D shape ‘appearing’ as though a 3D mask is wiping on it’s separate surfaces, but the whole leading edge of the mask/wipe is glittering/glowing/sparkling. Is this done in AE or a 3D app?

    Cheers

Thanks, saw that one but hoped for something closer.

    I tried:

Many thanks, good advice as always. Unfortunately the producer has just told me that the director has gone back to the original graphics company. Damn indecisive directors.

ps. However, I like the idea of playing around with a 3D model by changing stuff like insignia, what are the chances of finding a free model (of any kind) where I will be able to do this?

April 14, 2006 at 8:35 am in reply to: AE 7 frame to 300dpi?

Thanks, it looks like I will rebuild in PS, even though I will have to try and reproduce Roughen Edges. For some reason the vector artwork looks blocky in AE even though I have checked all the relevant switches. I thought it might be the camera so I dumped that and unchecked 3D; still crappy. It’s a big image, 2598×1866 (roughly A5), could it be that?

    Thanks again guys.
