  • That’s good to know Walter, thank you. However, it is a little disappointing to know just how far Apple have fallen in this market. I haven’t touched a PC for 15 years and I am positive that things are a lot better in that world than it used to be, but there are many things about Mac that I am comfortable with and am reluctant to let go, even though it has been crossing my mind more and more. Somehow it feels like the beginning of the end…

  • Thanks Jack, that’s extremely useful. It seems you were in the same position as me with a tower. I also have a 23” display and I was wondering whether I could hook it up to the iMac. Do you need to use an adapter?

Also, could I ask you one more question? What do you have as a backup solution? At the moment I just have a couple of external drives and simply use Time Machine.

Okay I’ve just tried an experiment using Particular to fire small particle blocks and then using that as an alpha track matte for the image layer. I’m at 25 FPS so I’m using 25 particles per second (therefore one particle per frame) and then animating the emitter from left to right, starting at the top corner and then moving down 70 pixels (that’s the height of my particle block) on each line.

But that’s the tedious bit. I’m having to add 70 to every keyframe position. So I figure, there must be an easy way to use an expression. Well, it would be easy if I wasn’t crap at expressions.

    It seems to me an expression for the emitter might go something like this;
make a variable for X, but X is always the full width of the image so this never changes, except it would be really handy if somehow AE could know the width of the image/composition.

Then, a variable for Y which gets 70 added to it after each ‘scan’ (no idea how to do this)

Also, a parameter where I could change the speed of the scan. I guess having a couple of looping keyframes would work too. I know that increasing the speed would need the particle to be bigger, but that’s cool and easy to change.

Finally, as I’m thinking aloud, it would be great if I could change a couple of the images so that the scan started at bottom left or top right etc.

    Thanks guys.

Michael: unfortunately all the shapes are different and will need to scale independently and at different rates, so I don’t think shape layers will help here.

I am exploring Dan’s site to see if I can adapt any of the expressions, but expressions are not my strong point…

    Hi Nolan
That’s a very nice piece. I am trying to do something similar re; the cardboard cutout look. However I can’t get the extrude to work. I have a still of a waving flag that I have placed onto a simple plane. I have the alpha working so I am getting a cutout shape, but when I place it into an extrude nurb I get nothing. Even when I make the plane editable. How did you solve it.

    Thanks

Step aside, angry man coming through!

You’re right, that’s what I remembered and that’s exactly what I was looking for too. Well done for submitting that request, thanks on behalf of all of us.

Plus, as in my previous post, it’s a (very tiny) bug.

Actually, I’ve worked out. It’s a very tiny bug. If the viewer resolution is set to ‘Auto’ the project window doesn’t recognise it. It goes back to whatever the previous setting was.

ha! You’re absolutely right! You read my mind. I just wanted to make sure it didn’t affect any rendering resolutions.

    Thanks again.
