its not that it can’t be done effectively Tom, its just that FCP doesn’t offer free and easy access to such a workflow. this is a choice by Apple, who promote instead the full resolution online only workflow
that said, there are options (i posted a couple on your same question on another board)
if you’re not tied to FCP but are tied to the format and workflow then the online/offline workflow using XDCAM proxies to edit with final conform to full res at a later stage works an absolute treat with other NLE’s … GVG EDIUS and Sony Vegas both offer exemplary XDCAM proxy to full res workflows

the control surface is the keyboard and you can map keys as you like
given that, there’s absolutely no reason why you couldn’t use any old programmable keypad as a dedicated control surface for your switching needs

You might want to post the log for the thread that crashed over on the Apple Discussions FCP forum … there are a few guts and all FCP users over there who would likely have a look for you.
the part of the log that you need to post would be best explained by an example: here’s one

apologies if I missed the earlier details regarding the specifics or your system, i/o and capture method, but it would seem that you either have an issue with the signal path getting into FCP, or when monitoring the captured footage after the fact ? just a thought given the symptoms

I’m not from the DF/NDF neck of the woods (yea PAL) but DV over firewire is pretty much a no brainer … just go to your Easy Setup’s, choose the matching setup for your source, and then just leave the setting alone ie don’t go in and modify them, they’re already set correctly

Well its a rare day indeed to find you asking a question, and even less unlikely that I could answer it, but in this occasion I think I got lucky.
Go to your XDCAM Transfer preferences and switch ti the Import tab. In the lower part of the pane you should see an option to “Only import monitored audio channels”. Thats the one you want to check.

that is disappointing.
the PDW-U1 drive units have a faster optical drive mechanism than earlier xdcam players w/ max read speed of 120 Mbs versus the older player’s max read of 72 Mbs, or so it is reported.
i’ve generally seen transfers of xdhd at around 1.2 – 1.4x on our F70’s, with the U1 i’d have expected speeds more like 2x – 2.5x -
