  • XDCAM Import, turning off audio channels

    Hey guys,

Searched the forum, but couldn’t find this one.

We’re doing our first XDCAM, importing the files directly from the camera, Sony 170, using the Sony Transfer Software and it’s all working just fine.

Only issue is, every clip is coming in with 8 channels of audio. I’ve gone into the preferences and have only checked 1/2 and 3/4, leaving 5/6 and 7/8 unchecked. In the logging panel, we’re set up only to monitor Channels 1 – 4. In fact, the camera only shoots 4 channels of audio.

But I keep getting 4 phantom channels of audio and the XDCAM Transfer Software shows each clip as having 8 channels of audio.

Any thoughts from the folks who use this format all the time? If there’s only 4 channels of audio even available on the camera, how are we getting these four phantom channels and can we turn them off?

    Thanks!

    Hey Walter

Well its a rare day indeed to find you asking a question, and even less unlikely that I could answer it, but in this occasion I think I got lucky.

Go to your XDCAM Transfer preferences and switch ti the Import tab. In the lower part of the pane you should see an option to “Only import monitored audio channels”. Thats the one you want to check.

    Cheers
    Andy

    That was it, thanks much!

Picture quality is nice, but I have to say, the transfer speeds are painful. I guess we get spoiled with the P2 transfer speeds.

the usb external xdcam drive is supposed to be 2 to 3x faster
    than the deck for importing.

Actually according to some threads here on the Cow, folks have found that transfer speed underwhelming. Here in Atlanta it’s darn near impossible to find any XDCAM decks to the client had the videographer bring his camera in as we don’t intend to purchase any XDCAM gear ourselves. Hopefully this is a one off project as we’re primarily a DVCPro HD shop, though we’re looking at the Sony EX-1. That camera is incredible and I like the sticks more than the large XDCAM cartridges.

Hi Walter ….. What do you think the future holds for using the XD Cam footage and FCP in terms of seamless work flow. We too are interested in the camera, but are put off by some of the slow import stories were hearing. thanks BW

No clue honestly. This is our very first project with the format and I honestly don’t expect very many more. We don’t use the format in house and none of our primary clients use the format either. Several of them are very excited about the EX-1 though so I expect us to start working more with that format.

Image quality is outstanding though, I will say the IMX-50 format of these XDCAM’s is definitely better than DV50 from Panasonic.
