CF card? Are we talking about a DSLR here? Did you transcode the footage properly through Log and Transfer, or take it straight from the card in it’s native format?

AVI is just a wrapper, it says nothing about what kind of file it actually is. Ask them if they know anything more about the format, or what they could possible export to.

Both great tools. Personally I think color grading is better done in a dedicated tool with dedicated controls, keyboard shortcuts, interface etc., and so I tend to prefer Color. That said, going to Color takes more time and effort, so if it’s a quick in-and-out project, Colorista can create equally good looks.

If you’re strictly talking about files, you can use a utility like MediaInfo to analyze it.

Have you rendered it yet? Unrendered previews of HDV can create a subtle pulsing, I’ve noticed, probably some dark magic to reduce the bitrate for playing in real time.

Open Disk Utility, and select your drive. Does it say Mac OS Extended or FAT32? If it’s the latter, you’d do well to reformat it to Mac (bear in mind that this will erase everything on the drive).
And David:

That might not be a good phrase to throw around these days, with both LaCie and CalDigit putting out USB3 drives that most definitely ARE capable of video editing.

Well, run a test and see the results for yourself. Personally, I’d still stick with LT. But if you don’t see a difference (on a decent monitor, of course) then go for it.

Make sure your sequence settings are matching. FCP can do this when you’re copying from a lower-field sequence to an upper or vice-versa.
