  • “The clips don’t say what codec but are 1440 x 1080”

That again leads me to believe it’s HDV. You get the same result trying to view the clips in Quicktime, right? Have you tried MPEG Streamclip?

  • Sound like you need the HDV codec from the link your boss gave you. But that should have been installed with FCP… unless it’s a funky implementation of it…

You could try copying and pasting the Mac HD > Library > Quicktime folder from the working system to the non-working one… not exactly recommended practice, but if the FCP and QT versions are the same it shouldn’t cause any harm.

You can actually use Toast to do this.

Use LT. Proxy is a little low even for consumer AVCHD.

In Log and Transfer, set the AVCHD preference to LT. Then say Yes when it asks you to set Sequence Settings to the clip.

Hmm… instead of reconnecting from the pre-made sequence like he does, try using Media Manager on your sequence to create an offline version, then reconnect from there.

    XDCAM-EX, yes.

23.98 without pulldown IF your EX footage is 23.98. If it’s 29.97, you might as well get the telecine at 29.97 (with pulldown, assuming the 35mm was shot at 24).

2K and 4K are resolutions, so they would be potential options instead of 1080. They’ll look better than 1080, but since your EX footage is 1080 (and I assume your final deliverables as well), it might be more trouble than it’s worth.

Traditionally, telecined footage comes with a 3:2 pulldown to accommodate the 24fps it was shot in with a 29.97fps workflow. If your EX footage was shot at 24, and the 35mm was as well, make sure to request it at 23.98fps without pulldown.

As for video format, 1920×1080 ProRes HQ is probably best if they can do it. You could go 2K or 4K if you wanted to (and their machine could handle it), but since you’re working mostly with EX, you might as well have it match.

Your guess is as good as mine. HDV is a notoriously troublesome format, it wouldn’t surprise me at all if the fact that it’s HDV was to blame.
