    I’m waiting to hear about a job which might included some telecined 35mm footage.

    The project will be mixed, however the bulk is EX CAM footage.

    Having never dealt with this telecined footage before, I was just wondering how it comes, or how I should ask it to be delivered for ease of use.

    Also are there any potential issues/pitfalls that might occur mixing telecined 35mm and HD footage?

    Many thanks.

    Traditionally, telecined footage comes with a 3:2 pulldown to accommodate the 24fps it was shot in with a 29.97fps workflow. If your EX footage was shot at 24, and the 35mm was as well, make sure to request it at 23.98fps without pulldown.

    As for video format, 1920×1080 ProRes HQ is probably best if they can do it. You could go 2K or 4K if you wanted to (and their machine could handle it), but since you’re working mostly with EX, you might as well have it match.

    Hi Zak, thanks for the reply, just a quick clearing question though;

    So I should ask for 23.98 fps with no pull down and 1920×1080 prores HQ.

    When you say I can go 2k or 4k is that as well as the settings above or is that another option all together?

    Many thanks.

    23.98 without pulldown IF your EX footage is 23.98. If it’s 29.97, you might as well get the telecine at 29.97 (with pulldown, assuming the 35mm was shot at 24).

    2K and 4K are resolutions, so they would be potential options instead of 1080. They’ll look better than 1080, but since your EX footage is 1080 (and I assume your final deliverables as well), it might be more trouble than it’s worth.
