I usually purchase the FCP books from Peachpit Press as soon as there is a new release of Final Cut Software. And I have found that it takes about 3-6 months for them to release updated versions of their training manuals. Thats after the in store release of Final Cut Studio. I am sure it is the same with various institutions.

We use Final Cut Server to manage our media. All new footage being used in projects lives on our main 24 TB Server. Each editor is responsible to create daily backups of their projects to a local drive in case of a catastrophe.
When a project is finished,
1) it is Media Managed and backed up by the editor to an LTO along with Final Quicktime Versions.
2) After that, Final Cut Server moves all entire projects media to an Archive Server where all the footage that was ingested for that project waits to be backed up to LTO and removed from the system. This way we have 1 copy of a Media Managed project on an Edit LTO and 1 copy of all the projects media on ar Raw Media LTO.
We also keep all camera disk and tape media in our library. We haven’t decided yet to go over our original media.
The searchable Proxies Final Cut Server creates from each clip stays on the server.

I use Digital Heaven’s plug-in called DH_Reincarnation to replace dead pixels.

March 9, 2011 at 7:08 pm in reply to: My First NAB! What should I know to make the most of it?!Many of the vendors that will be at NAB have FREE exhibits pass codes for EXHIBIT ONLY. Which means you can walk the floor till your hearts content. If you are an FCP editor the below after event is at minimal cost and usually great fun and a good place to see what others in the field are doing. There is also a free event code on the page for you to use. Remember you need to do your homework on what you want to see and take away with you at the event. My first year was OVERWHELMING.

I usually plan what & who I want to see each day as early as possible. Most exhibits have demos scheduled throughout the day so plan on extra time to see the demos you are most interested in. There are lots of after hours events as well. Many companies and user groups host them. Some have already been announced and others are announced as it gets closer to NAB. Many are FREE and others that do not involve dinner are very budget friendly.

March 3, 2011 at 3:59 pm in reply to: What should I buy as an upgrade to my editing system?I am also in the market, but have decided to wait to see what is released at NAB. That is only my choice. While Thunderbolt does look awesome, nothing has been released for it yet. I am sure everyone is running to have their products updated in the coming months. If I needed a new system now I would have to purchase now. Luckily I have some time before I have to make a purchase and I am sure within a month after that there will be something newer and better as always.
It looks to be a great year for post. More new products are in the horizon than in years past.

March 1, 2011 at 3:00 am in reply to: how can you move a sequence of still images all at once in final cut?Have you tried placing the images in a Nest? That way they live together as a group and can be moved around together without effecting the background layer.
