Backup advice please
OK, so working in a company that have an 8TB RAID which we all connect to via SMB. We shoot a lot of HDV but also a lot of XDCAM for the bigger projects. We have lots or external hard drives, but use them for projects. Basically what Im asking is if anyone knows a reasonably safe way of backing up our XDCAM material. We wipe the card each time we ingest it, for re-use. We’re not too happy about using a singe external harddrive as our XDCAM archive because HDDs fail so easily. We would use our Raid (because its RAID6) but we need to preserve space for projects which we’re actually doing, not as an archive/backup system. Whats the best, cost effective way of backing up large amounts of data as safely as possible? (Not worried about encryption and security, just need some system which isnt going to melt and leave us with no archive).

A Cache-A LTO system would be just the ticket. If not, buy more and more hard drives.

What about only backing up the card files. These are your tape masters.
The mov files you can delets after the proj. is complete.

What about backing up to BluRay?

We use Final Cut Server to manage our media. All new footage being used in projects lives on our main 24 TB Server. Each editor is responsible to create daily backups of their projects to a local drive in case of a catastrophe.
When a project is finished,
1) it is Media Managed and backed up by the editor to an LTO along with Final Quicktime Versions.
2) After that, Final Cut Server moves all entire projects media to an Archive Server where all the footage that was ingested for that project waits to be backed up to LTO and removed from the system.This way we have 1 copy of a Media Managed project on an Edit LTO and 1 copy of all the projects media on ar Raw Media LTO.
We also keep all camera disk and tape media in our library. We haven’t decided yet to go over our original media.
The searchable Proxies Final Cut Server creates from each clip stays on the server.

Cache-A has a couple of different models. The lowest price (called the Prime Cache) is around 7 grand US, I think. The ProCache is a little more. The nice thing is, it’s plug and play, doesn’t require taking up and extra PCI ports on your computer and there’s no extra software needed to run it. Unbox, plug it in to the wall and your network, and go. Cache-A support is excellent and helpful, (they can remotely log in to your machine and check out what’s going on. Super cool and easy).
