  • What should I buy as an upgrade to my editing system?

    Hello,

Looking for advice on what to buy as an upgrade to my 3.5 year old IMAC editing system. I do professional video editing, but it’s a one-man shop, not high volume kind of thing and miraculously my IMAC has been able to handle everything I’ve needed to do so far. It’s 2.8GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 2 GB RAM. I need something more powerful now though.

Should I go to the new MacBook Pro because of the new thunderbolt connection? If so, I will definitely need an external monitor for better viewing. Or will I still get a more powerful bang for my buck with a Mac Pro? Should I wait to buy a Mac Pro until a new model comes out?

Doing lots of HD video editing and primary concerns are cutting down on rendering time and faster footage transfer speeds. Also, price DOES need to be factored in. Can’t buy it all…

Advice on external storage/back-up to go with this also appreciated.

    Many thanks!

    – Jesse

I am also in the market, but have decided to wait to see what is released at NAB. That is only my choice. While Thunderbolt does look awesome, nothing has been released for it yet. I am sure everyone is running to have their products updated in the coming months. If I needed a new system now I would have to purchase now. Luckily I have some time before I have to make a purchase and I am sure within a month after that there will be something newer and better as always.

It looks to be a great year for post. More new products are in the horizon than in years past.

I’m very pleased with my new(ish – I got it last summer) Macbook Pro, but I would say that the main reason for going for the MBP is portability. I take mine places, so it’s the best compromise for me at the moment. If you don’t need the portability, then the better bang for the buck that you get with the desktops should tip the balance that way. Waiting a little to see what’s coming next on the desktop front might be a good idea, if you’re not in a hurry.

Andrew, curious to know what MBP you’re working with? Mine (4GB RAM NVIDI GeForce GT 330M 256MB GDDR3) is having all kinds of problems with with a current project. FCP is crashing, I get error: out of memory pop-ups, I’m wondering if I need a new system too.

Also had an old Intel IMac that has been a work horse for me, but is sadly on the fritz. Now not sure what to do.
