On top of the preview window, you can select for DRAFT, PREVIEW, GOOD or BEST. Each is followed by a choise for AUTO, FULL, HALF or QUARTER. You can’t miss this…

To get even more possibilities, you can have two noise textures above each other on two tracks and play with the composition modes. And since both noise textures can be keyframed, the number of possiblities are countless. You can even replace the lower noise textures with your own picture or video and play with the blur settings or other fx of the lower track. In this way, you can create very easily customized backgrounds within Vegas.

Is het possible that you have checked the ALWAYS USE THIS METHOD checkbox? In that case you can reset your choise in the PREFERENCES- VIDEO tab.

Did you try to reduce the preview resolution?
Another thing I like to do is RENDER TO NEW TRACK (Ctrl M) of CPU-intensive parts of the timeline. The advance of this is that you still can change the original effects, but when there is no change needed, this prerendered files will only be copied during the final rendering. So no second time rendering is required.

And if you are talking about the background color of the preview window: just right click on the preview window and choose for DEFAULT BACKGROUND, BLACK BACKGROUND or WHITHE BACKGROUND.

Are you talking about the background of the video? Or the background color of the preview window itself?
