I’ve been using Vegas Version 8 for a year or so now to capture and edit HDV footage from my Canon XH A1 camera. It has all worked great including recording the HDV back to tape or burning to standard DV discs. I’ve now turned my attention to all the standard DV footage I’ve collected over the years. Unfortunately, when I connect my DV camera (Panasonic GS400) by the firewire all I get is “Device not Recognised”. I’ve looked in Preferences and set to DV PAL but I can’t find any mention of the “Radio Button” for DV that the Help section alludes to. I assumed that I set this to HDV in the first place but can’t remember now! Any help in trying to get the system to recognise my DV camera and capture .avi files would be much appreciated.

Is het possible that you have checked the ALWAYS USE THIS METHOD checkbox? In that case you can reset your choise in the PREFERENCES- VIDEO tab.

You simply need to use the external Vegas capture utility
to capture from a DV source…..the internal one you are always
using to capture HD is different.

Checked the setting as suggested but the “always start a new project with these settings” isn’t checked. What I find odd is that the on-line tutorial regarding video capture suggests that when I connect a device Vegas should prompt me to select either HDV or DV radio button. This doesn’t happen in my case – just goes straight into a project. My “Vista” PC will capture externally as MPEG type files and I can import these OK into the Vegas timeline but not AVI files directly from the camera.

The reason Vegas doesn’t come up with the DV/HDV requester is because you obviously set it to the “HDV all the time” option at some point in time.
Do as Theo suggested to change it back to DV.

That’s a different setting. Try: Options | Preferences | Video then check [X] Use external video capture application

Then go to File | Capture Video… and you should see a dialog that asks if you want to capture DV or HDV.

Many thanks – that worked just fine and I can now import .avi files direct from my DV camcorder! Amazing what “checking” a box can do. Didn’t realise that there were different capture applications within Vegas. Again, many thanks for your help.

I too had the same issue and I know it was from checking the box to always use HDV. The posts were helpful as I can now capture again in DV but the problem is I can not locate the box to uncheck my selection, I have to go through options / preferences each time.

Any ideas to get the box giving me the choice to come up again?
