I suppose the waves are only in the preview window? What happens when you increase the resolution of the preview window? Or when you (pre)render this effect? Probably the edges will look fine then.

These are plugins (e.g. for Vegas and other NLEs) which can do similar things as the composition modes you mentioned and much much much more.

I mean that .wmv files are compressed files that don’t play very smooth in Vegas on suboptimal systems. This file-type is anyhow not very suitable for editing.

Probably there are many ways to do this. The first thing I’m thinking of:
To create a yellow oval with a greyed out background, you can duplicate the track. The upper track gets reduces opacity (e.g. levels of 50%) and a secondory color corrextor with the saturation set to nearly zero.The lower track gets he cookie cutter fx with the choice for e.g. OVAL and CUT AWAY ALL BUT SELECTION and a feather as you like. The lower track also gets a secondary color corrector which you use to make the beam yellow.
You can keyframe the position the beam wherever you like in the small white square in the FX popup window.

Are you using the same project properties for Particle Illusion as for your video editing program?
Does the PI project play well when you play it in the preview window of PI?Theo

Particle Illusion does not contain a word processor. However, it is very easy to make particles that contain your text and add these particles to the emitter of your choice. See here for an example:
