  • Highlighting a word in Media Generator

Posted by Norman Willis on July 9, 2009 at 4:05 am

Hello. I am using Media Generator to put quotes up on the screen. (I like it.) Is it possible to make one of the words stand out from all the rest?

Can I change the font color of just one words to, say, yellow (instead of white)?

Or, alternately, can I use an inverted mask to make a ‘yellow highlighter’ oval on top of one of the words?

Or how can I do that?

    Thank you very much.

This is why I use Photoshop for my titles as this is very easy to do in that app.
A workaround is to duplicate the text onto another track, make the duplicate yellow and then delete the unnecessary letters on both events.
You’ll need to add some blank spaces in each one to get proper spacing again.

Thanks. I will try that. But how would I get the letters to align properly?

Alternately, could I key in a light gray mask over the rest of the quotation, but with a hole cut out over the word in question (to keep it fully lit)?

Second alternate: could I make a mask with a yellow oval or something in it, to act as a ‘highlighter’ of sorts?

It would be nice to be able to try all three effects, to see what works best (or maybe to use them all at different times).

    Thanks.

“But how would I get the letters to align properly?”

Having them on separate tracks makes alignment fairly easy.
All you have to do is play with the spaces between letters.

I can’t help you on your other thoughts as I’ve never tried those techniques.
All I can suggest is do it and see what happens.

    Cool. Thanks.

Can anyone give me a quick tip on how to create a mask that will either highlight an oval in yellow, or else ‘gray out’ all but an oval (and hopefully I can position the oval where I want it?

Probably there are many ways to do this. The first thing I’m thinking of:
To create a yellow oval with a greyed out background, you can duplicate the track. The upper track gets reduces opacity (e.g. levels of 50%) and a secondory color corrextor with the saturation set to nearly zero.

The lower track gets he cookie cutter fx with the choice for e.g. OVAL and CUT AWAY ALL BUT SELECTION and a feather as you like. The lower track also gets a secondary color corrector which you use to make the beam yellow.
You can keyframe the position the beam wherever you like in the small white square in the FX popup window.
