You did not search well enough. It seems this is the most popular problem editors working with h.264 footage from DSLRs are facing these days. Very well documented in this forum.

If you do chose the 5D, shoot 720/60 on both the HVX and the 5D. It will make your editing so much simpler.

Personally, I would get another HVX. If you want the film look of the 5D, rent a Redrock system for the HVX.

Go into your display preferences, select arrangement and swap displays (click/drag on the display to the left or right).

If you want true video output, not computer output, a capture i/o such as the Matrox MXO2 will give that to you.

It is impossible to connect your VHS directly to your MBP. If you think a VHS/DVD recorder is expensive then there is no inexpensive solution to what you want to achieve. Capture i/o devices start at $500.

One option is to connect the VHS to a DV camcorder and make a dub. The quality of the VHS already is low so DV quality is sufficient.

Unless you a a capture I/O card/device, DV is your only option.

By using Log and transfer, there is no need to use Easy Setup. Drop transcoded clip in timeline and let FCP figure it out. Select yes when asked.

Canon’s firewire protocol. Doesn’t allow enough throughput. You are limited on the iMac. Mac Book Pro with Express 34 slot and Mac Pro Offer more port expansion options.

Try just connecting the camera to your computer and capture 1 minute to your internal drive. If it works, then it’s Canon’s famous “I don’t like to be daisy chained” phenom.

Capture and edit in DV-NTSC. You not going to get any better quality by doing anything else.

I’ll second Data Rescue, it has saved my ass a few times.

Ironically, Adobe Bridge was able to see files that other programs could not.
