  • Capturing 8mm and hi-8 video using digital 8 camera – best settings

I recently bought a Sony DCR-TRV 320 camera (PAL version) to capture loads of old 8mm and hi-8 tapes that have been sitting around gathering dust.

I’ve had no problems at all capturing via the Firewire lead and it’s all working smoothly.

At the moment I’m using the DV-PAL preset for capturing in the footage but I’m just wondering if that is the best option to use? The video window doesn’t seem to match up exactly (there is some flickering along the bottom of the captured footage) and the colour of the footage doesn’t seem to capture particularly well, either becoming desaturated or in some cases heavily overexposed.

I know the quality of 8mm and hi8 isn’t particularly great to begin with but just want to be sure I’m using the best settings. My captured footage is perfectly watchable, just looks better on the camera than when captured.

Personally, I would capture it uncompressed 8-bit.

Thanks, may seem an obvious question but how do you set it up to do this?

I’ve tried changing my easy setup to uncompressed 8-bit but now when I open the capture window it says I need to specify a capture device in audio/video settings – I’ve looked at these settings and it seems that Firewire PAL is selected – not sure what I need to do to be able to see the footage in the capture window?

Unless you a a capture I/O card/device, DV is your only option.
