I have a BUNCH of old projects on VHS that have never been archived digitally. I’d like to make digital files and/or DVDs for archiving. I have both FCP 7 and X. Is there any easy way to take my VCR straight into my MacBook Pro and capture everything using Final Cut? Is there a specific RCA to USB or Firewire cable I need? Is there some kind of converter I need? These are basically old home videos so I don’t want to spend a lot.

I’m open to other better suggestions too. I just don’t want to buy one of those expensive VHS to DVD converter/burners.

    Thanks!

It is impossible to connect your VHS directly to your MBP. If you think a VHS/DVD recorder is expensive then there is no inexpensive solution to what you want to achieve. Capture i/o devices start at $500.

One option is to connect the VHS to a DV camcorder and make a dub. The quality of the VHS already is low so DV quality is sufficient.
