Using Apple ProRes 422 with 5D MKll
I’ve been using Panasonic HVX200’s in my studio with FCP for years. I have a client that wants me to add a third camera for a shoot. The camera he wants me to use is the Canon 5D MKll.
I shoot in 720P with the HVX200’s 30 frames/sec. The Canon will do 30 frames but it’s 1280P and I believe the Codec is H.264.
So mixing resolution and codec’s is new territory for me. Any advice or experience mixing this combination would be much appreciated

The Canon 5D MkII will only do 1080p @ 24, 25 or 30fps.
Other Canon HDSLRs will record at these same 1080p settings and also 720p but only @ 50 or 60fps.(Maybe your 1280p was a typo)
There are various ways of converting the H264 to ProRes, Mpeg Streamclip, Magic Bullet Grinder, Compressor or with the Canon EOS Movie plugin (which allows Log and Transfer directly into FCP6 or 7 are your selected ProRes quality).
Converting 1920 x 1080 frame size to 1280 x 720 shouldn’t present much of problem, shooting at a different frame rate will.
It would be much easier to use a second HVX200 though, unless there is a valid reason for using an HDSLR.

If you do chose the 5D, shoot 720/60 on both the HVX and the 5D. It will make your editing so much simpler.
Personally, I would get another HVX. If you want the film look of the 5D, rent a Redrock system for the HVX.

the 5D doesn’t shoot 720p60. The 7D does – But I find it looks like junk due to the even larger gaps of line skipping on the chip to achieve the 1280×720 frame size.

DITTO! Stairstepping on objects at the wrong angle. I believe it’s shooting 1080 and downscaling on the fly, but just a hard and fast downscale, or it’s just sampling a subset of the sensor lines. I’d shoot 1080 and just put in 720p seq or put other 720p in a 1080 seq better yet.
